  230. HI, Thank you in advance for your help. I recently acquired a LANIER 1110 MFD fax/printer. Currently I have a home computer, with another printer hooked up via a dsl cable. All I am trying to do is hook up my Lanier through the standard LTP1 port. Right now I have it connected to a power supply, have the fax line into the computer, and have the PRINTER CABLE HOOKED UP INTO THE BACK OF THE PRINTER. I tried to install the Lanier fax/printer onto my Windows XP operating system, but without success. When I downloaded the printer driver off of Lanier's internet site, and then when I tried to install it directly by double clicking on the driver icon, a box pops up giving me COM 1 - COM 4 as port options. But, if I go through the control panel, printers, add printer...then my computer is recommending the LPT1 port which is for the old standard printer cable connection. When I try to add my Lanier as a printer, I follow all the steps, and then when it asks to install printer software, I direct the computer to the 3-1/2 floppy drive (A:) for which I downloaded the printer driver, and I get a message that says "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." Can you help me? Thanks

  238. My LaserJet III has the following problems: It prints over some words and sometimes there are errant letters printed in the margins. What could be the cause? My operating system is XP.

  1. My printer pulls more than one sheet of paper. How can I fix this?
It's possible that you have some odd paper that causes this, but most likely, your paper pickup assembly is going bad.

The best bet is to have it replaced. This is the most common repair on small printers. The rollers are tiny, and don't hold up well.

A new assembly will make it print like new.

A bigger printer will have larger rollers and will last longer. That's why we recomend refurbished business class HP LaserJets to our clients.

  3. I have open and closed the printer door hundreds of times to relieve paper jams. However, this time I simply cannot get it closed again. I can't tell if anything broke or or something. Any tips? It's a HP laserjet 4500
There's no secrets on how to close a door. If it doesn't close, and it's not off the hinges, then there must be an obstruction. Assuming that you don't have a foreign object present, we'd have to conclude that something in the printer is aligned.. which would likely be the consumables. Look at what you did to remove the jam. Perhaps you pulled one of these loose. You might try removing and inserting these parts to make sure they are in.. and look for the levers used to access the toner, etc... if they aren't in place, the doors won't shut.

  4. what is laser printer?
Any printer that uses a beam of light to transfer an image to a photo sensitive drum. The image is developed on the drum and transfered to paper the same way as a photocopier. Laser light is used because it is easy to turn off and on quickly, and is very stable in wavelength.

  5. I would like to save paper and space by fliping the paper over and printing on both sides of a page with a standard laser printer. Will this harm the printer components in any way? Bob DeBellis
In theory, running paper that has been printed on is "dirtier" than printing on fresh paper. However, in the real world, we've never seen any disadvantage. If parts do wear quicker, or if it does cause the machine to get dirty faster, the effect can't be measured. Most printer intensive programs have some form of funtion to allow for this... such as printing odd pages then even pages. In our own shop, we ALWAYS use both sides of the paper for testing. We've run millions of sheets through thousands of printers, and never seen any effect. One caveat, if you just flip a stack of paper and reuse it, you may have more paper jams. This isn't because of using the back side, it's more due to poor handling.. us humans don't stack the paper as straight as the mahines that make the paper reams this being said, we strongly recomend DUPLEx attachements when they are available. These all two sided printing without intervention.. you can send a book to the printer and it comes out numbered right without any flipping of paper. More important, it allow you to take an unformated report and put it on two sides, in order. Once you actually use a dupplex unit, especially if you've been trying the "flip" method, you'll see that the attachment pays for iteself in no time.. and allow much more versitility. We have hundreds of printers here at any given time.. but the few that we use for business always have a duplex attachment installed. We have duplex units for most business class HP LaserJet's in stock. The older ones are refurbished, and come with a full warranty from us. Call 800-466-5687 for more information.

  6. My LaserJet 4050TN printer was jammed, removed paper jam. Still had error message. Turned off the printer, ready light is on. Nothing will print, Help
If you have a PAPER JAM error message, you have to make sure that any obstuction (paper) is removed.. and that all the sensors are back where they belong. Look for trouble at the input trays (all of them), the back door, and under the toner cartridge. Most business class machines now give location of the paper jam.. they all start with "13" and the have another number, if your machine reads 13.1, you know it in the front. If you make sure all paper is out, then open the toner door and close it, most errors of this type go away. If not, read the control panel.

  7. where can I get a manual that describes the Laserjet 4m and also explains paper loading, etc.
The user manuals that are packaged with printers have varied over the years. Each one used to be a thick book, not used much. A better approach seems to be short start up manuals, and documentation online or on a CD.. but of course, the manufacturers only offer this on current models. With LaserPage, we've tried to offer support regardless of whether a topic is covered in the user manuals. You can ask here, and we'll likely give you a quick answer that is as good as what's in the manual. If you do want your own copy of any HP manual, it's likely still available. You can order copies of manuals by calling Landmark Printers at 800-466-5687.

  8. My Lazer Jet 4050 is giving me a error printer perform manitance reading. Can't seem to clear it and now it is printing fuzzy. Can you help out on what could be wrong and I can correct it. Thanks, Lynn Covernale
Your printer is just telling you that it's time to put in a maintenance kit. Unless you've had service recently, you should have this done as soon as you can. The kit contains a fuser, transfer roller, and pickup rollers. Once these are replaced, the printer should function as good as new. By replacing these components, you'll always have "like new" quality.. and avoid costly emergency repairs. HP designed the kit to be called "user installable".. it's really not hard to put these items in. However, our service department regularly does this as part of a service call, allowing the to dig a little deeper and clean the machine from the inside out at the same time. Either way, the maintenance kit is the best way to insure your printer stays "up" all the time. Landmark offers maintenance kits from most HP Laserjet printers, including yours. Most are offered at a significant savings from the HP brand, especially if you agree to return the fuser core. The kits are guaranteed to work as good or better than the HP brand, and are kept in stock for same day shipping. To order, call Landmark at 800-466-5687.

  9. i have a hp laserjet IIp plus and i am getting an error 52. i have had this printer since 1991 and it has worked like a charm since then. can u please tell me what error 52 is?
This error means that you have a bad scanner motor. It could be something else.. but not in the last 100 cases that I've seen. The motor gets old and burns out the connections on the PC board. We replace these everyday here at Landmark. For immediate service, call Landmark Printers at 800-466-5687. We fix all HP Laserjet and other laser printers. Most printers are sent back within 24 hours of receipt.

  10. I have a Laserjet Series II. I haven't used it in years and I finally dug it up and replaced the toner cartridge. The papers print completely blank but everything else seems to work fine. Can you help? Thanks.
A bland page is proof that the printer's mechanical mechanisms work, so there's some good news. To get a blank page, one of these is missing. 1. No image on the drum 2. No toner on the image 3. No charge to pull the image onto the paper. The first one can come from the computer... if you don't send an image, you won't get one. It also can happen if the laser scanner is bad. #2 would come from being out of toner... or the most common blank page... you didn't pull the strip from the toner cartridge. The third would be a broken corona wire, or could be a high voltage connection problem. More good news.. in practice, a blank page is almost always a sign of a toner cartridge problem. If you switch cartridges, and the problem doesn't go away, you can try a half page test. just print something (not blank) and open printer in mid print. You'll get a paper jam, but with the printer open, the drum in the cartridge should be exposed. If there is an image on the drum, it's #3 above.. otherwise, it's #1. It's unlikely you need a repair. But these older business class HP LaserJet printers are great units. If you need nice text pages, it will beat any inkjet for cost per page, permanent images and rugged dependability. We refurbish the and sell them here at Landmark. We think they are about the best built printer ever. These printer were designed to go a million pages.. and everything that wears can be replaced. We expect to see them used for years to come.

  11. Unable to print because it gives me a message: 50 Service. What does this mean and will this be expensive to fix. Thank you.
That error means that either the fuser has not warmed up. It can be due to a bad fuser bulb, connections, or the power supply. We fix these everyday here at Landmark. We can fix your printer, swap it for a guaranteed refurbished printer, or sell you the maintenance kit if you're technically qualified to do it yourself. For immediate service, call Landmark Printers at 800-466-5687. We fix all HP Laserjet and other laser printers.

  12. I have a laserjet 4050 that is not printing. The computer says the LPT1 port is not respoding. I think it is the port on the printer or a footer board or something in the printer. do you have parts for this.
There are parts available to fix any problem on your HP LaserJet... but first, let's make sure you need a repair. There are a lot of points where you can have a problem in printing. Almost all of them end up with a "printer that won't print" Before making any changes, I always like to know what is wrong with the system. So I start with the printer and work backwards to complicated software glitches... usually I find the answer without rebuilding the entire system Here the steps used to isolate a printing problem. PRINTER HARDWARE Does the printer power up, make noise and light up like it should? If the printer, by itself does not get to a READY or ONLINE status... your problem is at the printer. Make sure it's getting power, that consumables are installed. Swapping for a known good cartridge is a must before requesting repairs. PRINTER CONNECTION The cables have to be hooked up and not damaged. Cables go bad when they get moved or stepped on... if you have one that works.. it will likely work until it's moved, twisted or whatever... likely not from just sitting in one place. If you have a doubt, try a different cable. PRINTER PORT If you have a printer that works and a good cable.. you can turn on the printer before turning on your computer and you'll know the printer port is working by the noises you hear when you turn on the computer. Later models don't do much, but every printer I can think of acknowledges a boot up signal from the computer. DRIVERS Unless you've done something non-standard in your operating system setup, you should have working hardware at this point. Open the driver dialog box (START | SETTINGS | PRINTERS and a right click to PROPERTIES) and click on the TEST PRINT button. Windows sends a test page and puts up a "did it print?" dialog box. If you answer NO, you get a long winded version of the paragraphs above... Once you've read that, it's safe to always answer YES. If you don't get a test page you likely have a driver problem. DAMAGED FILES Most people who write in have already been told to replace drivers, uninstall and reinstall, or replace files. This is a very simple way for a tech support person to get you off the phone. Downloading and using the latest drivers is always a good idea, the manufacturers tweak with drivers from time to time and fix things that most of us never hear about. There no harm in deleting and reinstalling print drivers.. we do it all the time if there's any doubt about a damaged file. But generally, this is not a fix for "printer not found" or "no action" situations on existing situations. PRINT QUEUE The most common driver problem is a messed up spooler. The spooler holds print jobs in a disk file so that you can get back to work while the printer is printing. If your printer is off-line, jams, or is disconnected, the spooler hold the jobs and sets the driver to WORK OFF-LINE. This would be a handy setting if you have a laptop and want to store jobs till you get a printer... but can be a nuisance otherwise. The best bet is to PURGE the printer queue, make sure your printer is set as the DEFAULT PRINTER and that WORK OFF-LINE is not checked. All of these settings can be found in the print menu for your printer (START | SETTINGS | PRINTERS | double click on your printer's icon and find the PRINT menu) APPLICATION PROBLEMS Once you get a test page from the printer, try multiple simple tests before tackling hard stuff like Internet browsers, word processing anything with imbedded graphics. If your driver works at all... it should work fine with NOTEPAD, WORDPAD, PAINT type applications. If these work... then try a simple NEW document in you word processor, spreadsheet, etc... like one word on a page. If you get to this point, you're dealing with a software specific problem. I've covered most of the common causes.. if you want more detail on one area, just let use know which area you're having problems with. 13. My LASERJET 4L will not print from my computer. When I restart it it prints the "LASERJET 4L" sheet but will not print a test page when instructed from my computer. The connections appear OK. I have performed all of the troubleshooting from my computer
This isn't a problem with your printer.. but we can help. There is nothing wrong with your printer. And if you are using the driver that came with your operating system, then there are no updates for printer that came out before this. The problem is between Windows and Excel. Don't assume that just becuase they both come from Microsoft that they get along. Best guess is that you're creating a document that is too big for your printer. Adding memory would help if this is true.. however, you should get an error at the printer if this is the case. The LaserJet II came with 512k of memory (one half meg). since the OS of the printer takes some overhead, it's hard to print much graphic information without a memory upgrade. If you get a MEMORY OVERFLOW or PAGE TOO COMPLEX error, you need more memory. You can buy memory at a deep discount now, and you'll get 4 megs, even though 1 meg will do the trick on this printer. To order memory, call the printer experts at Landmark at 800-466-5687

  16. i have an HP laserjet III printer and am having some problems printing. I keep getting a "paper jam" error when the paper won't get loaded. What happens is the rollers feed the sheet of paper for a second and then stops. It doensn't feed it all the way in
You need a new paper pickup assembly. Over time, the roller that picks up paper wears out.. even if you don't use the printer much. Ozone eats away at the rubber, and the pressure of using in pulls off layer after layer. With a new roller, we also put in a seperation pad, mostly a piece of cork for the roller to push up against. We do both at the same time to eliminate a later service call. When you're done, the printer will pick up and process the paper as good as it did when it was brand new. Our printer refurbishing plant does dozens of these each week. We also put in a rebuilt fuser assembly, ozone filter (to remove the ozone generated and improve the oxygen content in the room around the printer), rebuild the power supply and exit rollers. This and a few other items give the printer brand new performance. You can trade your printer for a rebuilt one, get a full toner cartridge and a full one year warranty.. or talk to us about using our repair facilty to get just what you need. call Landmark at 800-466-5687 during California business hours.

  17. I have an HPlaser1200. I recently had my computer in for repairs. I hooked up all the cables to the hard drive. Now, I cannot print. Only the test page will print when I press the print button. All cables are intact.
When you get the test page, you've confirmed that the printer works. Next step is to make sure the driver software is set up right. Click START | SETTINGS | PRINTERS and look for the icon for your printer. Make sure this is set as your default printer and that "USE OFFLINE" is not checked. if all looks right, check the spooler. Doulbe click on the printer's icon and you should see a blank folder.. if there are print jobs listed, the computer thinks that the printer is OFFLINE and not attached. If this fails to lead to the problem, delete the printer and re-install.

If there is a bad gear, you'll need to have a service person tear into the machine and replace it. Before you do, make sure it's not the toner cartridge. replace the cartridge with a known good one (even empty) and try a print. If you get the same noise, you need service. There's a chance that the grinding is due to paper or another foreign object inside the printer. If you can see something, and get it out, you're in luck.

  19. I have a HP laserjet 1200 series. Last week I put a new cartridge in my printer. Today, after a week, there is a noticable margin line on the rightside of the print. What is my next step. Thank you?
This is most likely the toner cartridge. Replace it, and the problem should go away. Most likely, there is an obstruction blocking the light getting to the drum. If you can see something (like paper or dust), you might get lucky.

  20. I have a Hewlett-Packard laserjet 1100 model at home and at work. Both of these printers are terrible-they get jammed with paper very easily, the catridges seem to get used up very frequently, and there just doesn't seem to be any way to make these things
Referring to the numbered questions: 1. There has not been a recall. The machine is warranted for one year. We've repaired many of them under warranty, and more out of warranty. HP does provide a kit that give better traction to the roller, however, the best fix is to have the input assembly replaced. 2. If you depend on your printer. The HP LaserJet 1100 was a bad choice from the start. It hits a popular price point, but ANY printer under $500 has wimpy pickup rollers. If you want a dependable printer, nothing beats the business machines from HP. These sell new for $1000 and up (we have guaranteed refurbished printer for much less). Any inkjet or laser from any manufacturer will wear fast in a business situation. 4. We never did manufacture the 1100. It is made by HP. HP replaced it with the 1200 over a year back. These have great specs.. but as we said above, any new printer under $500 on the market today has wimpy pickup. Landmark can repair these assemblies, in and out of warranty. We can also set you up with a better quality machine. We repair and sell laser printers. This is our full time expertise. 23. HP LaserJet 4 gives a 57 ERROR and won't print.
This error tells us that your main motor isn't turning properly. It could be a bad motor..but this is highly unlikely, as most often, the error comes from a really bad jam in the gears or toner cartridge. YOu can try a different toner cartridge. I'd remove the one that in there, turn the machine off, and then on. If the error doesn't appear right away, put in the second cartridge and see what happens. If you still get the error, you'll need service.

  24. My HP Laserjet4 is giving me a 13 Paperjam error. However, there is no paper in the unit. I've tried opening and closing the doors and removing the toner cartridge.I still get the 13 message, any suggestions?
The printer give a PAPER JAM error when switches aren't activated at the right times. This can be due to paper stuck in the machine, paper removed where the printer thought there was paper, or a bad switch. If the printer gives a 13 error from the moment you turn it on, and you can't find a foreign object (like paper).. then you have a "false paper jam" and need service. This could be a minor problem, a stuck lever, or dirty contact.. or an inexpensive switch that needs to be replaced... with this printer, it's certainly worth fixing.

In some printers, the cartridge sensitivity tabs on the side of the cartridge activate switches inside, telling the printer to adjust voltages for the best prints. But if the tabs are completely missing, you'll get a 12 error, even if the cartridge is there. Anytime you get a 12 error, you should make sure that the door is closed, and then try a different cartridge. After this, it's time to seek service... a "false 12 error' is more than likely a sensor that needs to be replaced.

  26. I have an HP LaserJet series II. When it prints, it leaves a blank column about an inch wide down the right hand part of the page. Any ideas on what is causing this?
When there is no image on the page there is likely is no image on that part of the drum, and likely no light from the laser scanner is hitting that area. The easy fix would be to find a blockage just inside the cartridge cavity where the light comes out.. dust or paper chucnks can block out the light. More often, there is a blockage in the mirror, or cartridge. You can see this on the Series II and Series III by opening the cartridge cavity, not all the way.. just a few inches. Look above the cartidge in the upper door, you should see a green stripe that is a reflection of the drum inside the toner cartridge. Look for anything foreign in the light path, obviouly in the area where the blank column appears. If you try a different toner cartridge, you can easily rule out an internal blockage there. It quite possible to find and remove the problem.. if not, a service tech should be able to find the cause in a few minutes.

  27. I just upgraded my desktop which is using Window XP, I could not install the software, pls advise how I can do it ? thanks.
You need to install the proper drivers for this printer. Usually, the upgrade process identifies your installed hardware and tries to install drivers from the Windows disks. If you printer wasn't installed before the upgrade, or didn't get installed for whatever reason, you can add it from the control panel.. look for the printers folder and a link to ADD PRINTER. Drivers should be on the Windows disk for most printers that were released prior to the OS. Windows may ask for your Windows CD while running the wizard. You can also check to see if there are driver updates at: HP Customer Support

The disks that were commonly packaged with older printers conained drivers for various DOS programs. Very seldom do they have anything that you need for new Windows operating systems. Most HP LaserJet drivers are on the Windows disks, or preinstalled in CAB files on your hard drive. To install a printer, you can just click on START and then SETTINGS and PRINTERS (slight variation in some versions.. also in the control panel). To install, you just launch the ADD PRINTER wizard. When you get to the list of printers, choose HP, and select your printer from the list on the right. Windows then helps you find the drivers. If your printer isn't listed, you'll need to click on HAVE DISK.. but first, you can get the printers from HP at: http://www.hp.com It's always a good idea to check web sites for updated drivers for your equipment.. but you'll find that most of the older LaserJet printers just use what on the various Windows install disks.

There shouldn't be any difference between a quality third party toner cartridge, and the original HP brand. In test we've seen, the HP advantages are limited to such things as consistency over thousands of pages, showing a slight differnce in screen printed on opposite sides of the pages. For most users... it should be impossible to notice a difference in brand... that's the major selling point of the third party vendors. Granted, you could get a bum cartridge, both from HP, and from other vendors. Most compliant about changes like this come from the fonts used, or the settings in your software. Any toner or printer related issue would show in the printer test pages, or from a test page created from your computer with very large fonts (to make it easier to see the differeces) The one thing related to the printer that you might want to check is the density setting. You'll find it in the menus on the control panel. Normally defaults to a 3, can be set up to 5 to use more toner. Someone may have just turned it down enough to notice on the page you are printing.

  31. our office just recently purchased a new laser jet printer 4100tn. it works fine except for envelopes. if you print an envelope, it immediately asks you to print another which comes out with an error message on it. the message is PCL XL error Warning:
The data stream you're sending on envelopes has excess information at the end of the job. The envelope prints, then the printer is left with this information.. which it doesn't understand, and you get the error. Try printing a test page on an envelope (from the control panel). This will verify that the printer is working right. Then try a test page from your printer driver. It should also be working. If you're going through a network server, there may be added data in it spooler. Working backwards, from the printer to the network, to the computer, it's driver and finally your application software, you'll find the point where the garbage is introduced.. and should be able to guess what to change.

The jobs that get the message would be the place to focus. the printer is being told to print on paper it doesn't have or from a tray that requires intervention (or isn't there). The exact message should help. If it's asking for a paper size, you know the job is set to print on the wrong sized paper. If it's asking for a tray, like the manual feed, then your user has there software or driver set that way. We know it's NOT the printer.. if it were, you'd get the error all the time. The printer setting for these things can be overridden by the drivers on each computer, and further by most software applications. Likely, one or more of the users has set up for an odd job, messed with the settings and forgot what they did.

  33. why would a laser printer prints completely black page, just like if it's printing text but all black
A laser printer works by charging the photo sensitive drum so that it repels toner. Then, a light (the laser beam) hits the dots that should be "on" and the charge is changed so that it attracts toner. Any "too black" page means that the area that should be white doesn't have that charge. The typical approach to diagnosis is to replace the toner cartridge. If that doesn't work, it's a problem with the charged delivered to the cartridge.. typically the high voltage unit. If you can't fix it with a toner cartridge change, you need to have the machine serviced.

  35. We are using the HP LaserJet 4050 and 4000 series printers. Our 4050 is set to print barcodes on our paperwork. The 4000 is not. How do we set the fonts on the 4000 to print barcodes on the paperwork like the 4050 does?
The two printers should handle a print job exactly the same. That is, if you unplug one and plug in the other in it's place, you don't have to change anything. Barcodes are just another font to the printer. While it's possible to download fonts to a printer, or even install fonts in a memory slot, it's more likely that they are generated at the computer. If the printers aren't identical in printing... using the same port, you may have a SIMM in one. You'd need to order a matching SIMM for the other. Still, this is a software dependent issue. You should consult your software manaul or provider to see how they handle the barcodes. If you do need a SIMM.. try Landmark at 800-466-5687.

  36. In the laser printer what is fusion toner to do with the safety ?
There is no fusion in laser printer. But all of them have fusing, a word that sounds quite the same. the fuser assembly, or fixing assembly, melts the toner into the page. If you open a printer and remove a print job before this, the toner will come off.. and you'll be left with a clean paper (and some messy dust) The safety issue is the heat.. up to 400(f) degrees. Most printer have a bright grean cover protecting the assembly and a warning not to touch it when it's not.

  37. Is printing twice on the same sheet of paper likely to increase the chance of a paper jam?? or the paper not feeding through correctly?
Most printer will handle a wide range of print media.. and a wide range of environmental conditions. When you print on paper, you change the thickness, and remove moisture, which is why there is a temporary curl to most paper after it's printed. So it stands to reason that reusing the paper will cause more jams.. but not enough of an issue to keep you from reusing the paper. In our service department, refurbished printer department and in all our testing, we always use both side of paper. It's saves money, causes less waste output from our plant, and test everything in a bit more extreme circumstances. we've found that there is a slight difference in using paper that has just been used.. but if we take the paper out, put in in a letterhead box, and are careful not to let some pieces get dogeared or crooked in the box.. then wait till it's cool.. there is NO difference in performance. Again, in theory, the clean new paper is best. in practice, it would be a shame to throw out perfectly good paper when it can be reused. We have duplex assemblies on our office printers to use both sides of a sheet on the same job. This allows us to save paper, and we don't have to worry about putting our financial or customer's private information out in the shop to reuse. If you have a printer that take a duplex assembly, get it. It will pay for itself quickly. If not, you can reprint on the back sides. by the way.. you can also print on the front multiple times. As long as the toner is well fused, it will look okay. If the toner isn't fused well, or you use certain photocopier prints in a laser, you'll have problems.. you'll know right away, it will look like melted toner on the paper. Even so, this cleans up on the next print.. so go ahead and try it.

  38. Hello, I have an Epson Action Laser II printer. I have installed on two different computers and it prints fine except that you have to hold the page up to a mirror to read it. Any ideas as to why it would do this. I have read the manual front to back and
The reverse print option is great for printing something to put on T shirt transfers, but not very pratical if you're stuck in this mode. Printers can't do this on their own.. they just take data from the computer and put it on the paper. So it has to be in the drivers or software you are using. A test print from the printer itself will verify this. It should print right. This is usually not an option in the type of drivers you're using so you should be able get a proper print from the print drivers (START - SETTINGS - PRINTERS and then right click and choose PROPERTIES) Assuming the drivers and the printer work, you need to find out what in your software is changing the job to a reverse print. 40. We have a 6 year old 4V printer. We keep getting a "50 service" error and now the printer won't "restart". Can this be fixed? I was told the 50 error is like overheating...can the printer be repaired or is it past it's prime...thanks!
A 50 service error means that the fuser did not reach the right tempature at the right time. It can mean a power circut problem, or a blown bulb in the fuser. Sometimes, it can be reset by leaving the printer off for 20 minutes. If the error persists, you need a repair. We sell the 4v.. a very popular model. It's less than half the cost of the newer model, and the specs are about the same. It certainly would be worth investing a couple of hundred dollars to keep it running. If you'd rather swap for a fully refurbishe unit with a full one year warranty, call Landmark at 800-466-5687 and we'll work out a trade for you.

  41. I run Windows 2000 and have an HP 6P that worked on a '98 machine. When I boot up a PC (with no 6P driver), the S/W recognizes the printer and installs a driver. However, when I ask for a test page, I get an error stating that the file could not be sent
Since you got the test page, you know the printer works. And you likely have the driver installed that you need. So the problem has to be with the connection between them. Having the printer recognized by the computer would tell us that the cable is okay.. and the parallel port is acive. So something has been installed wrong. You can open the spooler and see if your jobs are getting "stuck" there, or if they go off into the ether. If the jobs are there.. you have the driver set to "not connected". If you don't have jobs stuck there, they are headed out to the wrong port.. and you can focus on changing the port settings.

That's an engine service error.. but as you just set it up.. the easy HP answer just might help... "If the printer was moved, or is not properly supported, make sure it is level and standing on all four feet. Click [On Line] to continue printing. If the error persists, turn the printer OFF, then back ON. If this does not correct the error, service is required."

  44. How do you get in diagnostic mode on a hp color laserjet 4500 printer.
Most printers have a service mode used by technician when certain parts are replaced. But the diagnostics are always available, and should display on the screen. You shouldn't need to switc the printer into any "mode" to troubleshoot a problem. Just read the screen. If the answer isn't in the manual, we'll be happy to help you figure out what to do with that information.

  46. I have an hp laserjet 2200dse that I use to print B/W images from a windows based image processor. It is taking upwards of 90 seconds for first page out. Can I upgrade this printer with more memory to get faster printing? Or is there anything else I can
Memory doesn't speed up printers. It's just used to store the page as it's delivered to the printer. Your problem is likely the speed at which the page is generated and sent to the printer. If you had a network printer, with an internal JetDirect card, the data would get there faster. It is possible to speed up printing if there are multiple jobs going to a printer and you add memory.. allowing it to store a "next page" while processing.. but first page processing is not at the printer. Sounds like you need a real networked business printer.

The message is simly asking you to wait while toner is moved from the resevoirs to the developers. If you think it's taking longer than it should, it would point to a problem in that system... maybe an obstruction. If so, you need service.

The error code 55 means that the printer failed to initialize when powered on. Turn it off for 10 minutes and try again. If it persists, you need service.. likely something has worked itself loose.. or just a part gone bad in a way that doesn't get caught as a more direct error.

  49. HP LaserJet IIIp - the problem is not the print, it is that the PAPER crinkles as it goes thru the rollers. It starts at about the 8th inch and goes thru the 11th inch.
This is bad rollers. The printer uses pick up rollers to feed the paper, rollers in the fuser that move the paper through the fixing process and exit rollers that deliver the paper out. They all go bad over time. In this machine, they are all close together. It would be good to get them all looked at at the same time.

If the printer is giving this error, then you need to have the printer repaired. However.. if the COMPUTER is giving you this error, you likely have some other problem.. the generic printer problem message in Windows tell you to plug in the paper and load paper. It just means that the job didn't print, which you already knew

  51. When our printer prints, it is leaving a blank sheet between every copie it prints how can we correct, have tried ever setting.
It's possible that a printer could have such a setting.. but highly unlikely. Your printer is just "printing" what it is sent. If your computer sends a blank page, the printer responds. The most common cause of this is a network "banner" page. This puts a sheet at the start of each job. But usually, there is something printed on the banner page. The other common possibility is extra character at the end of a job. The software send the data, then an END OF PAGE or END OF JOB character... any data that is left is flush out and the page is printed. Since you don't see anything printed, the buffer is empty.. but the command has still been sent. This sort of thing happened often in the days of DOS and software designed for dot matrix (they needed to advance to the TOP OF FORM to start the next job).. so if you're using older software, look there first.

  52. I keep getting an 50 service error. What is a fuser bulb and where is it on the printer?
The fuser bulb heats the fuser assembly.. the part that gets hot in every copier and laser printer. If it is broken, or there is an open circut to it, it won't heat up in the proper amount of time and (at least in HP LaserJet's) the printer displays the 50 error. We see a lot of 50 errors on printers with a blown power supply, and also get this on bad cables. The fusing assembly is in the message context.. but only one thing in the circut. All need to be checked by a qualified technician. If you need help, call Landmark at 800-466-5687.

  53. My HP 4100 frequently 'stalls' when I send a print command. I have to shut it off and restart it get it to print? What's causing this?
If you have no lights on the printer, something inside is bad and you need service. If you have lights, read the message on the printer. If it says okay, and the data light is on.. there is a partial page. You can send more data or an end of page command (or the next job) and it will print.. and you have a software problem. If you get an error message. It will tell you what else you might need to do.

  58. suggest the safety precautions that should be taken when investigating a fault on a laser printer
You should be concerned when handling a laser printer. There are some very hot places, usually marked with bright green. there are also several places where you could touch an get quite a shock. Full AC power is funneled into the printer, along with high voltage DC charges going to the charging system. The main concern would be grounding. If the printer is plugged in (not on) the ground wire is always connected. If you have good grounding in your building, you should have good grounding in the printer. Touch the metal chassis before touching anything else. This assures that you are grounded and you won't damage anything inside the printer. You shouldn't touch internal parts without gloves.. the oil from your fingers can damage the sensitve tranfer roller. There's not a lot a user can do beside put in a fresh toner cartridge. However, with some common sense, you should be able to fetch excess paper from jams, and clean up toner deposits. you can keep your printer clean with a cleaning kit from Landmark. Works with all laser printers. Details at http://www.laserpage.com/cleankit.htm

This has to be a software issue. The printer is being set to print in a small font size by software... either at the begining of the print job, or at the end of the previous job. The best bet is to isolate the problem. Send print jobs from the driver to insure that it is software related. If the driver test page prints, go to some easy program like NOTEPAD and gereate a new document. If that's working.. move to the problem application.. try a brand new document.. my guess is that you'll find that the trouble is contained to one or one group of documents

this is likely excess toner from the cartridge.. and likely builds up beacause the printer is thinking you have longer paper than you are using. You might do well to turn down the density.. but more than likely there is some dust in the paper path under the cartridge. If there is, you can use common sense to clean it up.. don't touch electrical parts and be careful to keep you fingers from direct contact to avoid putting a smudge on the transfer roller. 67. How can I physically connect my HP LaserJet 5MP to my iMac G3. Which port do I use (USB or ethernet)? I heard something about an ethernet bridge: what is it and where do I get it and approximate price?
Your printer has parallel and AppleTalk connections. So you have to convert to one of those. The best bet would be a JetDirect box.. the printer is then connected via a parallel cable. The JetDirect is actually a print server, so you can easily communicate over Ethernet.. and faster too. you can buy external JetDirect boxes for any type of printer with a parallel connection.. or even multiple printers. There are a wide variety.. but the most popular is one port and ethernet. Landmark stocks the internal JetDirect cards used in large printers, usually saving 50% off the cost of new. Completely guarateed, this would be a great idea if your printer had the slot required. We have a limited availability of external boxes.. and can always get you a competitive price on a brand new one. Price range from $150 to $300. Call Landmark at 800-466-5687 to see what's available.

If the attempt to recover from the error is successful, the Ready light will blink while the printer completes the job. If the printer cannot recover, it will display the Attention with the Ability to Continue message. Press and hold GO and JOB CANCEL simultaneously to display a secondary light pattern that will indicate the error code corresponding to the current error condition. Release both buttons to display the Attention with the Ability to Continue message. See Continuable Attention Errors. A engine test from the printer should stop when you hit the CANCEL button, or turn the printer off. If not, you've got a bad formatter (though I don't think we've seen this in thousands of printers) The more commone "won't stop" problem is pages generated by software and sent to the printer.. stuck in the printer spooler. This is solved by purging those jobs. But if it's the printer, you need service

The 1100 should always be on.. but in energy saving mode. it wakes when you send a print job. If you have it plugged in to a switch that stops it from getting power, you will of course loose power.. but this is not what you want.. it only takes a very tiny amount of power to keep it "on" all the time.. less than your TV uses to be "remote ready".. so it should be plugged in and "on" all the time

  71. We have a Hp LaserJet IIP plus, and sometimes it will show error 20. What is this?
This error comes up when you are trying to send more data to the printer than it's memory can hold. A laser printer needs to hold the entire page being printed in it's memory. Most modern Windows programs send font data and graphic information that exceed the small default memory in the older printers. The good news is that for a small price, you can get a memory board that will allow ANY page to be printed. Putting the board in just requires a couple of screws that hold the memory area closed. HP stopped selling memory long ago.. but these boards are available, at a fraction of the price there were sold for when new. Just call Landmark printers at 800-466-5687 during West Coast busienss hours. Your order will be shipped that same day.

Most printer have multiple menus available by making sure the printer is not ONLINE and hitting the MENU button. Keep pushing the button repeatedly to cycle through all the main menu branches. One of the branches will be TEST MENU. Once this is displayed, try using an ITEM button (arrow lables on some printers) and you'll find the CONFIG PAGE. Just hit SELECT, ENTER, or GO and the page will print. On the configuration page, you'll find a page count (on most laser printers) along with the full menu structure and current settings. While some HP service people will try to mislead you, the official policy of HP is that they will not void a warranty or refuse to service a machine due to the use of a remanufactured cartridge. However, they are well within their rights to not fix a problem caused by a third party cartridge. The good news is that ANY reputable cartridge seller will warrant that their products won't harm you printers. There are only two ways any cartridge (OEM or third party) could harm a printer. 1. gears binding and causing the machine to seize or strip gears. 2. excess toner dust in the machine could increase wear over time. Number one is possible.. but we've never seen it happen. Excess toner is almost impossible to measure. There is always dust, and 10% more toner would cause 10% faster wear. However, paper, and it's dust is far more worry than toner. As long as you don't dump raw toner in the machine, it is unlikely that it could change wear in less than many hundreds of thousands of prints. At Landmark, we sell remanufacturered toner cartridges.. and have been an HP authorized service center for over a decade. We've never had an issue that was even close to being a conflict on this matter. Sure, we have some problems from the toner cartridges.. but we tell our customers to call us. We replace the problem cartridge for free and NEVER have seen it even remotely alter the dependablity of a printer.

If you have this assembly replaced, and your service person know this, they will make sure that you get it fixed as good as new. This is one of the many procedures that we perform on every laserjet III that we refurbish. While it doesn't always wear out, we make sure that we do everything needed to be able to guaratee our printers for a full year of use.. in fact, most go on for many years without another problem.

once replaced, there is a menu item displayed. Press ITEM until TRANSFER KIT SELECT IF DONE appears in the control panel display. Then press SELECT. Figure 9: Selecting transfer kit on the control panel NOTE: The HP LaserJet 4500 series printer will not display the message Transfer Kit Select If Done unless the message The Transfer Kit Low Replace Kit (4500) or Transfer Kit Low Order Kit (4550) was displayed prior to replacing the kit. Your printer doesn't like the date it's getting from the parallel port. This could be from a bad port, or bad data from the computer.. but first, you should check the printer cable.. make sure it is connected, and perhaps try another.

  86. While printing labels, a label peeled off in the printer. How do I get it out?
If you can see the label, you can peel it off. You can apply a little cleaning solvent. We use a special label remover chemical, but many cleaners will help. Be careful not to get any on places you can't remove.. especailly the transfer rollers and electronics. chances are, at least part of the label will be unaccessable. this is an easy repair for a technician, and you'll get the machine cleaned at the same time. Look at it as prevenative maintanence on the machine.. no an expensive goof

  87. My LaserJet4 is printing dirty copies. What are the options for cleaning? (1) Where can I purchase a cleaning package? (2)Is there some way I can get the printer to clean itself by running a certain program?
You can clean a printer by sending a printer cleaning sheet through the printer. You don't need any special software, just print a blank page. It's also a good idea to look for excess paper and toner dust.. these can be picked up with a 'toner grabber' If these don't work, you need to have your printer professionally cleaned and serviced. Landmark has the cleaning kits. Call 800-466-5687 to order.

  88. I have a Cannon LBP4 laser jet but have no user manual. My grandkids did something to the menu and all I get is garbled printing from the computer. The test page, however, prints okay. How does one reset the printer to the factory default settings?
Unlike some manufacturers, Canon doesn't support older machines. So you're stuck with us If you get the test page from the printer, try sending a test page from the driver. If this works.. your problem is software. If what you get is some garbled text, most likely the problem is with the communication settings at the computer. You can reset most printer by holding down the online button will turning the power on. However, it's more likely that you have a problem at the computer side... or a bad data cable.

  92. we have a Hewlett Packard laser jet 4050n printer, we are trying to print laser claim forms, when the forms print, they are starting to print about a half inch to low, they are not printing the information in the correct boxes on the claim form.
There are settings in your software (at least in most software we've seen) that should allow you to test the alighment and adjust it. The printer just takes the page and prints it. There is no way for it to move the print on the page. On an old tractor feed printer, you can mover the continous feed paper around.. but laser printers always line up everything based on the top of each page, and only do what they are told. you may find that a different driver will help. Some software is set up for PCL 5 and the new printers use PCL 6.. however, they can use driver from the older printers and this may make a difference.

  93. My Sharp JX-9460PS which has been very dependable since we bought 10 years ago has started putting a black line down one side of the paper. What do I need to do to clean off this line?
This means that your drum or developer has gone bad. These are consumable items that you buy and replace. it's possible that the line is on the fuser. If so, you'd need service. In any case, it's unlikey that a line is from anything that can be cleaned.. lines down the page come from a worn component. A good analogy would be a car wiper blade that starts leavng a streck.. usually has to be replaced.

  94. letters sent out come back to us shadowed and smeared. We are told it is the heat of the postal processors that cause the ink to let go. How can we get around this issue with an HP4000, HP4100 and HP2100? Thank you
Laser printers use toner, not ink, to print the page. Just like photocopies, the toner can offset (transfer to another surface) when heat and pressure are applied. This happens a lot more depending on the type of paper used. The most complaints we've seen is from user of linen stock, but anything with a grain won't do as well as a slicker surface. If the print is okay coming out of the printer, your printers are working fine. There is no adjustment neccesary, in fact, there is no way to change anything! Bear in mind that the post office will smash mail, tear it, print and write on it.. the phrase "don't fold staple or multitlate" doesn't apply to them. You don't want to add to the mess, so try different papers and don't obsess. We all have to put up with this!

Your printer, and the drivers are working right. The problem is the software. All software can override the settings of the printer and the driver... especially sophisicated programs like WORD. start a new document.. make it very simple.. and then adjust the printer properties from inside WORD. You should find the problem easily this way.

  96. My Laserjet series II prints all black pages with three different Zerox toner cartridges. Is there a printer problem?
It could be the Zerox cartrdiges. We'd trust the Xerox trademark a lot more. If you get the problem with a known good cartridge, then it's likely a high voltage problem. More importantly, if it's not the cartridge, you can rest assured it IS a service problem. It can be fixed.. but requires a technician.

outside of the cartridge, the most likely problem would be the scanner. If there is anything blocking the light, or the mirror on the top clamshell, the light won't get into the cartridge to produce a print. It could be a problem with the fuser, but usually if it's completely blank in that area, I'd try looking for an obstruction first

  100. My HP Laserjet III printer stopped working - screen says "service" - what does that mean? (I know what to do when the screen reads "toner" or "paper out" but this is a new one. Thanks.
SERVICE is short for "CALL A SERVICE TECHNICIAN".. These errors, usually with a number over 50, are telling you that part of the printer has failed... and may need to be replaced. If you call a technician with the code number displayed, you can get a better idea of which components have failed. If it's major, consider swapping for a refurbished HP LaserJet III. instead of just fixing one problem, all the major parts are rebuilt or replaced. You get a rugged, dependable workorse of a printer for a fraction of the cost of new. Call 800-466-5687 for details

  101. What does "50 service" mean on the printer's screen?
This message is displayed when the printer's controller fails to get a signal that the temp in the fuser has reached the proper level by a certain time. Also called a "fuser error" it is commonly thought the fuser has gone bad. However, in most cases, the power supply has blown and you're not getting enough power to the fuser. When we refurbish a Laserjet III, we always repalce the parts in the power supply that cause this problem, put in a rebuilt fuser assembly and replace the rubber rollers that wear out. The result is a printer that works as good as new, for a fraction of the price. For more information, visit http://www.landmarkprinters.com or call 800-466-5687

That would usually be a temporary error.. and resetting the machine should fix it. If you have a good toner cartridge in place, have no paper stuck in the machine, and paper in the tray, you've done about all you can do. You can eliminate the possiblity of a data error by disconnecting all cables (except the power cord) and seeing if the error goes away. If the printer works without the data cable (no error, prints a test sheet) then it's not the printer but something sending bad data. You first problem would be the power block. Unless you know what you're doing, you can't take this apart. It is sold as a full assembly. The other noise would be the exit assembly rollers. This is a common repair. We still sell several IIp and IIIp printers per month. You're right that with multiple problems, the repair cost will exceed the value of the machine. Most IIp and IIIp users hang on to their printers becuase they like the small size and convenience.. and they are pretty dependable. When we see one like yours, we recomend a swap for a good one, or an upgrade to a business class printer. The printers that sold for thousands when new now sell for about the same as the IIp and IIIp.. you get a rugged dependable business class printer for less than most of the newer "toy" machines. 110. I have a Laserjet 4 and I suspect that the fuser temp is a too high as the paper seems a bit rigid as it comes out. Is there a potentiometer on a circuit board that sets the max temp.?
Most printers to not have a setting for this. (some newer big printers do.. but that would be a service call). Likely, it's other factors. Try some different paper. Try running the paper through the MP tray that folds down in front. Fanning the paper before using it might help a little. Usually, you'll find that after the paper sits a while, any negative effect is gone. This could be a fuser out of spec.. but there are sensor to tell you if it's too cold, or too hot. If so, you get an error code displayed and have to replace the fuser. You could try a different fuser.. but in our experience, you might have to try 10 to get one that the slightess difference, very little difference if you consider the paper factors.

Most vertical lines are caused by an imperfection in the rollers used to make the image. The good news is that most of this is in the toner cartridge. Change that, and the problem should go away. That's always the first step. If the lines appear with a second toner cartridge, the most likely component in the fuser assmbly. If so, you'll need to have the printer serviced.

  114. My Laserjet II: Shows error 51 in front panel display.
This is a scanner error. The scanner is the thing inside that makes the jet sound. If the light from the laser isn't reflected to the right sensor, the machine assume that nothing will print, and shuts down. If you turn the printer off, then try again.. the error will come back the first time you try to print. Most of the time, once you get it, it's not going away. If this only happens during a long job, the problem is dust or residue from the paper. The rollers picking up the paper get coated and allow more than one sheet. Assuming it is the paper, you would know by running a long job with other paper stock. Solution may be as easy as "fanning" the paper to remove dust.. or you may need to try other paper.

This isn't a problem with the printer. Rather, you need to adjust the size of the print job being sent by the software. These setting are all controled by software, and are specific to each program

  118. Our HP4600 gives a very light grey background. What needs to be cleaned/changed to remove the background color?
There could be a number of ways that a background is added to a print job. But let's assume that you're getting this on ALL prints. The density of the black cartidge is suspect. If there is too much toner going on the page, it has to land somewhere. If you can't adjust it, next would be a replacement of that toner cartridge. It's unlikely that any hardware problem would affect one cartridge, so this would be the likely solution. There are other things that could be going on.. a technician could tell a lot more by seeing the page.

Don't touch the transfer unit. It's self cleaning. Anything you see on it have to come from the toner cartridge. If it's putting excess toner on the belt, beyond adjustment, the problem would be with that toner cartrdige. If replacing the cartridge doesn't help, you need service

The error from DOS is likely due to the copy command.. if you fix the printing problem, you'll not have to worry about the right command. if some jobs print, then it's the document size. the "buffer" you're thinking of would be the memory inside the printer. Since the printer only prints when it has a full page ready, it has to keep all the data for that page in it's memory. large documents can overrun the memory. All the "delete" command can do is to stop sending data.. if there is data printing, it has to come out. If you have a multi-page job, you can try to grab the paper tray before the next sheet starts. Then reset the printer.. but this can cause more problems. 125. Our office has an HP Laser 4100DTN printer. When it prints the logo on a Word doc for our office, it prints it like a negative, with a black box around it. An HP 2200 prints the same document normally. What can be done for the 4100?
There is likely a glitch in the driver/software/windows combination that you are using that is "caught" by the logo file you have. You can try converting the logo to another format, or changing it for color to gray scale (in Word). When experimenting with this sort of thing, it's best to try a brand new document.. you may find that it's just a certain document, font, or other combination that causes the glitch. If they ever fix such a glitch, Microsoft won't release details. There isn't an update.. so all you can do is hope to work around it as described here.

  127. I have an HP Laserjet III. It doesn't operate upon instruction from the computer.

  128. I have been trying to clean the engine on our 2100M Laser Jet and the paper jams. The user guide says to discard this paper after the engine has cleaned, but the paper jams. Can you help?
cleaning probably won't help the paper jam.. so it should be fixed first. This is likely a problem with the rubber rollers, but a qualified service technician will be able to tell which parts to replace in a couple of minutes of looking at it. They will do a better job of cleaning, usually included with the service fee.

  129. My laser jet III says 50 Service. What does that mean?
the fuser assembly is not heating up in the time alloted. This is usually due to bad power and the power supply would need to be replace, thouth it's common to replace the fuser at the same time if there is any wear. For the price of service, you can get a "swap".. a completely refurbished HP LaserJet Serier III that has had both these parts (and others) replaced and is warranted for a full year. You might also want to upgrade to a newer refurbished LaserJet printer. We have hundreds of models to choose from. Call Landmark at 800-466-5687.

  130. How do I print an envelope together with a letter using LaserJet 4 Plus
You're software has to specify the paper tray and data on the form. Some word processing packages allow you to highlight and address and click a button to create an envelope... if the settings in the software are correct, it then calls for the right tray to be used. The printer cannont create the address, or decide what part of a letter get printed on which paper.. it only obeys the computer.

  131. I have a HP LaserJet 11P Plus printer that says "Needs service" and I was wondering if it's just more economical to buy a new one than to repair the old one. It was working fine before that message appeared.
The IIp is still very popular because of the small size and dependability. Due to pricing pressure, the quality of the small printers has gone down hill over the past several years, and you're unlikely to get the same dependablity again. However, the newer machines are faster and have better resolution. If you're happy with the features, and want the small size, a "swap out" to a guarteed refurbished IIp or IIIp might be a sound move. We take your printer, and send you one that has all the parts that wear out replaced.. giving you a fresh start. You can also swap your printer for a business class HP LaserJet printer. These are even more dependable, and have more features.. and some at about the price of a repair on your existing printer. New, refurbished, or repair.. Landmark can handle it. Our goal is to get you up and running fast, with the best prints possible, and the greatest value over the life of the printer. Call the printer experts at Landmark at 800-466-5687

  132. How do I test he memory on a HP 6MP Laserjet ? Where is the memory located ?
The memory is located on the left side of the machine under a metal cover that is behind the outer case. The best way to test memory is to print a configuartion page on the printer. If you don't have the memory showing, try a different SIMM, making sure you use ones specified for this printer.

The extra resolution doesn't improve their screens, and the refurbished LaserJet 4v sell for less than half the cost. 134. What does 50 service message mean on the HP LaserJet 3D? We cannot get it to print and no longer have the manual. Thanks.
Any error above 50 means that you need service. The 50 error tells you that the printer's fusing assembly didn't warm up in the time alloted. This could be a bad fuser, a bad power supply, or bad cables between the two.

This would mostly likely be a fuser error, meaning that your fuser isn't warming up.. it could be a bad fusing assembly, or you might need a new power supply. Either way, I'd trade up to a refurbished HP LaserJet II. A much more dependable printer, and sells for less than a repair on your printer. 136. We have a HP LaserJet 2200d. We have misplaced the manual and now there is an error message that says: ERROR: MemoryFull OFFENDING COMMAND: show Stack: 216.0 68.0 203.0 68.0 14 584 -savelevel- What can I do fix this?
This is a error on the computer. Often, an error comes up when you print, becuase there are drivers and other files that are loaded and used just for printing, and your system is working harder. While the error occurs when printing, it could be something else. This is easy to verify.. just print a test page from your printer. If it comes out, the printer is working fine. Next try a TEST print from your driver dialog box. Likely, this will work fine, and confirm that the driver, hardware and cable work. That leaves the files on the computer. You can try deleting and reinstalling the driver software.. creating a different document to see if the error is just in that document... or try a different software application. If you find that one document or program causes the errro, try deleting and reinstalling those files. The last resort is to reinstall Windows.. we saw this often in early versions.. but 99.9% of the time is not needed with newer operating systems.

There are a couple of settings you can adjust in the driver... for instance, you can substitute a different internal font for courier and maybe get better formatted ouput. The real answer to setting PCL settings is to embed them in the software. If you bypass the windows printing system, it's up to you to format the job. while we've never seen a Java program do this while running through a web interface, it is possible. Bottom line. The programer is responsible for calling the right routines and seding the job properly formated. If that's you, you can get a PCL reference manual from HP. Your printer and driver are fine. It's the software that's screwed up. And the Laserjet 5p doesn't have a control panel to compensate. You may want to try a printer that has a control panel. We actually sell quite a few HP LaserJet Series III printers for this very reason. If you're interested, call Landmark at 800-466-5687 to learn about gauranteed refurbished HP LaserJet printers.

  140. The print is flaking off of the documents I'm printing. What is the cause and how can I fix it????
assuming that this is a laser.. the toner is not "fixing" or "fusing" to the page right. Each page has to pass through a fusing assembly, though this is usually not the primary cause. Usually, the problem is the particular paper you're using.. or too high of a density setting causing too much toner. Try different paper, and adjustin the density settings. If you are get NO fusing, then it's the fuser... and you'll need service

  141. Hp4100 Pcl6, When paper tray 3 is empty printer defaults - pulls paper from tray 2. Only problem is my tray 2 contains checks. any way to stop this and have machine ask for more paper?
We've found that it's best to use tray 1 for checks, and keep them outside the printer. There's just too many ways that you can accidently get the wrong tray. You can set drivers to go to a tray, rather than "default".. and set the printer to "stop on errors" and hope that no software overides this.. asking for default..and you not knowing the difference till the tray is empty. You could also tell the printer that tray 2 was a custom size of paper.. if you could convince your acct software to use this (say 8.5 x 10.9 instead of 11"). Then the printer would always get an error saying that the paper size was wrong. Most of the time, the printer is trying to help when you run out of paper.. you might get a warning.. but the default times out and trys to print on the same size from any tray.. except when using tray 1.. which can be set to MANUAL feed.. and better yet makes it easy to stash the checks next to the printer so you don't have to remember all the "gotchas" involved. If it's set to manual, you'll have to stick the checks in AFTER sending the check print job.. so you'll have a reminder.

  143. When I print a document it prints for me, but there are lines going across the page about an inch or two apart from each other from side to side

Without seeing the printer, or knowin the model, paper size, etc.. it's only a guess.. but the first type tends to be a roller.. (rubber rollers that move the paper, photosensitive drum, fuser rollers) and the second would be likely the drum having a bad spot. your printer only prints what's sent to it. You software is likely sending characters that are foreign to the built in fonts. You can send the characters as graphics, or use a font that is not part of the machines defaults. If the printer prints it's test page, it's NOT the hardware.

  147. Occasionally pages are getting crumpled when they come out of the rollers. It doesn't happen all the time. What can I do?
If the crumpling is happening at those rollers, the exit assembly is going bad. If you only get it once in a great while, it could just be the paper, maybe it was just loaded a bit off. However, rollers in the assembly do wear out (over time.. not necessarily due to use). All you can do to fix this is to replace that assembly. This is more likely to be an issue with your software... The printer prints what is sent to it... evidenced by the fact that others can print. At the end of each page, the software should issue a FORM FEED or EOJ (end of job) command that is just another character in the stirng sent to the printer (called an "escape sequence" In DOS, and other operating systems, this is done totally by the softare. Windows uses drivers to change the formating of the document to the codes needed at the printer... but the commands should be in the software. This is an odd problem. Usually everything defaults to the correct setting. My guess is that you have older software that is not set to interface with Windows and it's drivers. One driver setting asks if you use DOS programs. Toggle this setting to on/off and it may help.

  160. My home printer is a HP LaserJet II. I purchased a NEW HP LaserJet II cartiage, but now my printer says NO EP. I still cannot print. Can I get a refund, do I need another printer??? HELP - PLEASE.....
NO EP is supposed to mean "no electro-photographic cartridge in the printer".. but really means that the switches that senses the cartridge are in the off position. Open the cartridge door. You should see one or two black plastic tabs that stap into the right side of the cartridge. If one is missing, it's a density setting. If both are missing, you'll get a NO EP error. If the tabs are there, look at the area where they will hit when the door is closed. There are two ribbon sized pieces of stainless steel that bend when the tabe hit them. If there is an obstruction, these might not work. But likely, if the tabs are present, the micro-switch under one of the tabs is bad and you need service. if it is the cartridge, just return it to the place you bought it. And good dealer will stand behind the product he sold you, but HP requires that the dealer that sold you the cartridge handle returns.

Most HP LaserJets will accept all sorts of command. To do so, you have to send them using a program that support this, or the command prompt. Some of the smaller printers only use a "host based" system, and won't accpt the commands. HP has a document on this at: PCL command

you don't want to use the wrong drivers for your version of Windows. You should use the ones that are built into Widows.. found on your hard drive, or the CD that came with the system. 167. I just purchased a hp LaserJet 4200. I am unable to get the copies to collate from a Visual Foxpro program. The copies collate on a Lexmark 150. I have called hp and they say it is a Foxpro problem. Do I need a special driver?
HP is right. It's not the printer, not the driver. But the ball is in your court. Why buy a printer that doesn't do what you want it to do? Your dealer, supported by the manufacturer should guarantee that the printer will print what you want to print. Call your dealer and insist on it. If you bought from the low bid, fly by night operator, you'll have trouble finding them, let alone getting them to stand behind their products. And HP won't deal with you directly (as the suitability really is the dealer's problem). So, assuming you're stuck.. try finding the software vendor.. or at least find out what version of FoxPro you have. They make it in several flavors. It could well be that your specific database was designed to send a code to the Lexmark that is different than the HP PCL standard commands. No doubt about it. The printer will print the jobs.. you just have to find out how to send it. The copies have to be collated based on a command from the software. You might have the problem referred to in the following article.. but we're assuming HP talked to you about hardware trouble already... 4200 collate problems

  168. though printer have papers it show error that printer is out of paper
Just about anything other than a fully working printer will get you this error in most Windows computers. To find out what's really wrong, you need to read the error message on the printer. Check if the pirnter can print it's own test page.. and check for communications (data cable, and port).. then check the Windows driver to see if you can print a test page. The error at the printer will lead you in what to do next.

  170. I HAVE A LASERJET3P GIVEING ME ERIOR 52 WHAT NEEDS DONE.
The 52 error is a scanner error... almost always caused by the motor in the scanner overheating. You need service. Rather than just have this fixed, and risk having another problem soon that would put your costs above the replacement costs.. consider swapping for a refurbished unit from Landmark. These are fully cleaned, and parts are replaced even if they haven't worn out. All the service is done at once so that the printer works as good as when it was new. A fresh full toner cartridge is included and the printer comes with a full year warranty. This can be a real cost saver. Call Landmark Printers at 800-466-5687. 171. I own an hp laserjet 4 (model no. C2001A), which I bought in the early '90s, and which I've never needed to repair, until now. I am now experiencing incurable paper jams in the fuser assembly (the paper folds up like an accordion
This could be fixed with a fuser assembly replacement.. but might also be other rollers that have just worn over time. A qualified repair technician can diagnose and repair the right parts.. but we'd be concerned that since you haven't had other work done, you could be needing other repairs soon. Since each service call is mostly the overhead of getting a technician to you, this can wind up being quite costly.. to say nothing of the down time. An alternitive is to swap your printer for a complete refurbished unit from Landmark Printers. We take printers that are working, disasemble and clean thoroughly, and replace all the parts that wear.. not just the broken ones. You get a printer that "good as new" for about the price of a good repair. Each printer comes with a full toner cartridge and a full ONE YEAR warranty. Models like the HP LaserJet 4 are some of the best printers ever built. Newer models have some great features, but cost cutting and the push for speed meand the quality isn't as good as the older units. (Technology moves forward, but it's still the same paper). A refurbished business class HP LaserJet is perfect if unless you need a color laser, or some of the hot new features. To delete a pirnter, just open the printers folder, click on the icon and hit the delete key. But you don't have to delete one printer to use another.. you can install as many printers as you want. HP has drivers online.. but most versions of Windows include drivers for all the HP printers released up to the point the operating system was introduced. Quite likely, you have drivers on your drive now.

  173. HP LaserJet 4 plus - What does 41.3 paper error mean? And how can I clear it?
This error code means "invalid media type".. which could be caused by trying to use paper that printer can't handle.. but more likely means that your paper is just "a bit off". Pull it out and reinsert the paper. If you get a persistant error, the input assembly and rollers are worn, and you need service. Call Landmark at 800-466-5687

  175. Does Windows XP support HP LaserJet 5L printer? Do I need to update the driver? I keep getting an error message that printer is out of paper. I have had sensors, etc. replaced, but the error keep coming up.
Yes, there are drivers built into Windows XP. Heres' the HP stament on that HP Statement on Windows XP compatiblity The Windows error message that says you are out of paper is generally a waste of time. It appears anytime a job doesn't print... and doesn't help you (unless you ran out of paper) You need to find out if the printer is hooked up right, and receiving data. The 5l is very prone to input paper jams.. but if the paper feeds, it's just a matter of setting it up right. If you do have hardware problems, conact Landmark at 800-466-5687. 177. We have an HP Laserjet 4 plus and for some reason after changing the toner cartridge it prints gray, does that mean the fuser needs replacement?
The first thing to do is check that toner cartridge. You may have received a dud. You can set the density on the printer. Take it offline, hit the MENU button till you see TEST MENU and then the ITEM button until you see SELF TEST. Hit ENTER and you'll get a configuration page, with the RET and DENSITY SETTINGS.. the RET should be NORMAL and the DENSITY is a number between 1 and 5. Many modern cartridges print darker than the orginals.. you may have turne the machine down in density and now have a lighter printing cartirdge. You can also put the old cartridge back in.. you might not get a usable print.. but at least enough to see if the density changes.

  178. I have been given an HP IIIp laserjet. I know it's old, but can it run on a Mac computer? Is there a driver that could be used for it? Is there a cable that could connect from its parallel port to a USB?
It can be done.. but you won't like the cost. You would need POSTSCRIPT, either converted at your computer, or a chip and memory upgrade for the printer. You would also need a cable.. and you'll have to make sure the drivers can find the port and compatible name (Apple made Personal LaserWriter that was the same engine). The cost will be more than the printer is worth. Better to swap it for a printer made to do what you need. Landmark has refurbished printers.. business class units that will last for a long time.. and fully refurbished, with the parts that wear replaced, so you get a heavy duty machine for about the cost of upgrading the one you have. 179. I have a an HP-P1000. the printing is coming out-not in the vertical width of the paper but the opposite width of the page. How do I correct this?
Frilst, let's get some definitions. LANDSCAPE looks like a painting or photo of landscaping.. wider than it is tall PORTRAIT is more like pictures of one person.. taller than it is wide If you get portrait when yo want landscape (or vis a versa), it's usually not the printer, the printer is just printing what is sent to it. Look for a place in your application software or driver dialog box where you can choose. Whichever it's set to, you change to the other. It's possilble to sent straight text (not Windows fonts) to a printer and have it generate the formatting.. most printers have this capability to print from old DOS software and take a straight text dump.. but today, almost all text is formatted a the computer.

  180. I recently bought an HP 1000 laser printer. The paper curls, waves; the heat is intense.
There is a tendency for paper to curl when heated. The moisture is removed, usually one side of the paper has a slightly diferent moisture and the paper curls temporarilly. Usually, just letting the paper lie in the output tray for a few minutes removes most of the curl. certainly any effect is not permanent, but the time to recover can vary due to the paper, the environment and how the paper is stored before/after printing. For professional use, we never reccommend the HP LaserJet 1000 or 1300. These smaller printers are just not as well built as the business class LaserJet printers. For the price these toy printers, you can pick up a guaranteed refurbished busienss class HP LaserJet model from LandmarkPrinters.com These are printers that are built to leave on all day, run lots of pages at once, and always have a lower cost per page than the toy printers Find out more by calling 800-466-5687 or visit LandmarkPrinters.com

  181. What wt(s) card stock can the HP 4200 print on with no problems?
HP has recomendation for paper. But of course you can print on card stock
To have less problems, you should use thinner, more flexible card stock, but the printer will work with any card stock that it can pick up from Tray 1.
While we can't say you will have "no problems" with any type of media, if you can get through 4-5 sheets, you won't have problems thereafter.
A case could be made that thicker card stock will wear out a printer faster if you use it exclusively, we think that any difference is so small as to not be measurable (people who print a lot of card stock print a lot of everything), so go ahead and try it.

  182. When Printing out a Purchase Order, Just the text prints out. There is Border all around it and some wider than others, but it doesn't happen all the time. We have a laserjet 4100N
This happends somewhere between the comptuers software and the Windows driver

Your form is probably using fonts to create the lines.. and there is an incompatiblity with the font names.. The lines here are actually characters.

It's quite common for software like an accounting package to asssume that you are using PCL 5, the standard from all laser printers up to the LaserJet 4000 series. New printers come with drivers for PCL 5, PCL 6 (and Postscript).. and defualt to PCL 6.

Barring any software upgreades available, the best bet is to use the PCL 5 drivers. Since you can install an unlimited number of printers in Windows.. we just reinstall and sellect the PCL 5 drivers and call the printer "4100n-PCL5", leaving the old drivers intake.

Our own internal accounting system has the problem. We've found that there is no harm in using the PCL 5 drivers for all business office items.. the newer features just speed up complex graphics.

Ultimately, we found that an older printer dedicated to our invoices works great. We use refurbished business class machines and end up adding functionality at very little cost. You can find out more about these refurbished machines at LandmarkPrinters.com

My first guess would be the toner cartridge. Try a different one, and see if the problem goes away.
This is a great little printer.. and one dirty roller would not be a good reason to replace it. If you look at the prices and feature listing on the new "toy" models.. you'll be tempted.. but all the cheap models are cheaply contscturcted.. and most don't offer near enough toner to print at the price per page you're getting.

The software that makes all the functions work on this machine is more than just drivers.

While most any LaserJet printer driver will format prints for your machine, the other functions need real software inside your computer.

  206. i have a brand new computer and a new hp psc 1300 all-in-one, i have installed the software and it shows in the control panel to be installed. also set as default printer, but it won't print. it will copy, scan but no print! help!
Here how I isolate printing problems. HARDWARE
Does the printer power up, make noise and light up like it should? If the printer, does not get to a READY or ONLINE status... your problem is at the printer. Make sure it's getting power, that consumables are installed. Swap for a known good cartridge before requesting repairs.
    CONNECTION
Cables have to be hooked up and not damaged. Cables go bad when they get moved or stepped on. if you have one that works. it will likely work until it's moved, twisted or whatever, bu not likely from just sitting in one place. To make sure, try a different cable.
    PORT
Turn on the printer before turning on your computer. You'll know the printer port is working by the noises you hear when you turn on the computer. The printer acknowledges a boot up signal from the computer.
    DRIVERS
You should have working hardware at this point. Use the CONTROL PANEL (in the START ment), find your printer's icon and right click to PROPERTIES. Click the TEST PRINT button. Windows sends a page and puts up a "did it print?" dialog box. Answer NO and you get a long winded version of the paragraphs above. YES just turns off this help. You'll know if you have a problem if you don't get a print.
    DAMAGED FILES
You may have been told to replace drivers, uninstall and reinstall, or replace files. This is a simple way for a tech support person to get you off the phone. Using the latest drivers is always a good idea, but most newer version of Windows already have the best drivers. There no harm in deleting and reinstalling print drivers.. we do it all the time if there's any doubt about a damaged file. But generally, this is not a fix for "printer not found" or "no action" with a formerly working printer.
    SPOOLER
The spooler holds print jobs in a disk file so that you can get back to work while the printer is printing. If your printer is off-line, jams, or is disconnected, the spooler hold the jobs and sets the driver to WORK OFF- LINE. This would be a handy setting if you want to store jobs, but a nuisance otherwise. Delete all the jobs (files) in the printer queue, make sure your printer is set as the DEFAULT PRINTER and that WORK OFF-LINE is not checked. All of these settings can be found in the PROPERTIES for your printer.
    APPLICATIONS
Once you get a test page from the printer, try simple tests before hard stuff like Internet browsers, word processing anything with imbedded graphics. If your driver works, it should work with NOTEPAD, WORDPAD, PAINT type applications. Next, try a simple NEW document in you word processor, spreadsheet, etc... like one word on a page.
I've covered most of the common causes.. if you want more detail in one area, just let me know which area you're having problems with.

  207. What is off hook. Every time i print, the next time i get ready to print it says off hook. I shut it off reload paper but the same message comes up? Also I have a all in one HP Model 500 series, on my test page it says no color but i have color ink and it is suppose to print color. What am i doing wrong? Also can i get a manual on this model number
this is a phone system term. It means that the phone is off the hook... if you have a phone line problem, it will not allow for faxes.. but the annoying message can screw up other things.

There is no reason that it shouldn't work. Try deleting the printer driver and reinstalling. If the system asks if you'd like to use the files left over from the first install, say "no"

Assuming that you get this without any connection to your computer, it has to be a bad board or connection inside the printer. You need service.

  213. I have a HP LaserJet 4v I was wonder if there is a way to make it so I can print a page with the correct margins, it doesn't print with equal margins, if I give a page 1/2 margins all around, I get 3/8 on one side and 5/8 on the other. We are a printing company and it would save a lot of time if we could print with the correct margins.
The printer doesn't set the margins. You need to set them in the software.

If you wanat to override setting that are not working for you, try creating a document with incremental adjustments, and measure the output. With a few test pages, you'll find that you can control it. Then set the defualt margins in your software to match what you want.

You might be able to set them in the driver.. but remember, softare commands override driver settings, both override printer settings.

You have to have a driver for any printer you use

The driver for the HP LaserJet IIIp is included with XP. You don't need to download it. Look in the Control Panel, PRINTER folder for the ADD PRINTER applet.

Go to the driver properties, try a test print. If it's not in color, you need to find the color setting in the driver and turn in on.

More than likely, it's a software problem. Your program is not sending color information.

    you most likely need ink.

once you know you have good ink cartridges, try a test print from the printer. If you can get this, you should be able to get a test print from the driver TEST PRINT button. If you don't find a problem here, there is something wrong with the document you're sending.

  219. Our office shares a HP LaserJet 4100N printer. How can we get one persons entire job to print before another persons interupts it? Our print jobs get shuffled like a deck of cards.
Best guess is that some, or all of your users are using a program that generates print jobs as seperate pages... there is a time out setting that allows the printer to wait for more printing, and in older applications, the defaults might not be enough.

The trick is to find the setting that will make the printer wait, but not sit idle for a long time when nothing more is coming. This can be very dependant on the software, the network OS, and the topology of your network.

You can find a timeout setting for the printer in the configuration menu and experiment from there.

  221. why can't I uninstall my hp psc 750. it says the program is corrupted!!!!!!
It could be that the program is corrupted! You can find the files and manually delete them, or just install over them, making sure you don't choose "use files already installed" when you install.

if you're not using the printer anymore, leaving the files on your computer won't hurt

You're trying to "launch" (run) a file that is not a program. Windows wants to find an application that will handle the file. This can happen anytime you double click on a file that is not a program file.

Try using the INSTALL PRINTER wizrad in the printers folder of the control panel

If Windows asks for the Windows CD, you have to have it for liscened use of the product. If you have an unsupported driver, you need to contact the manufacturer of the printer. HP.com has drivers for all it's printers.

Thanks
The driver information file you need is not on the floppy, hence the error.

You need to point windows to the location of that file (whereever you saved it)

WebJetAdmin controls printer settings, and helps install drivers, but the driver defines things like this. You can find a "print fonts as bitmap" setting in the driver and turn it off. You shouldn't need a different driver.. but you may have the wrong ones installed.. you'll lhave to check the workstation giving you that error.

  233. Could you provide a per print cost on a hp9000, printing a postcard (5.5 x 3.5) with mailing and return address?
Sorry, the cost per page would vary greatly. To calculate, you need to know the cost of the paper, and whether you're printing any graphics. If you're just printing text addresses, the toner cost is negligable A small fraction of a cent per card. You'll get 80-100,000 addressed for one cartrdge, you can use the estimates for maintaince on the printer, same as if you were printing paper.
