  1. What size should I make my blankets?
The most common size, used by the majority of shelters, is about 20 inches square. This size fits nicely into most enclosures, and comforts cats, small dogs, ferrets, rabbits and other critters. However, we support all shelter pets, from small guinea pigs to large dogs. So do feel free to make your blankets any size....we will find a good home for whatever you create!

  2. Do you only make small, 20 inch square, blankets?
No, we make blankets of all sizes. We suggest the smaller ones for our new volunteers since they are quick to make and can be used by the greatest variety of pets. We encourage all our volunteers to follow their heart and make the size they feel is right - whether it\'s a small blanket for a guinea pig or a large one for a Labrador Retriever! We can find a home for any size blanket and love all critters, great and small!

  3. How are the blankets used (besides just cuddling)?
We frequently hear great stories of how our blankets have saved the day. Often adoptive families are so excited about the process, that they come to the adoption center with just an empty carrier. When they find out that a cuddly blanket will line the carrier - to make a more comfortable ride home - they are so grateful. Many of the shelters use our blankets to wrap around a warming disk for the animals who come to them ill. They put the disk in the microwave and then tuck them into a blanket. Shelters also love to wrap the critters in their blankets for the frequent vet trips the animals have to take. The blankets provide something comforting and the vets typically keep the blankets with the animal through their entire visit.

  4. Are blankets needed year-round or only in the winter?
This program started during an especially cold winter in Chicago, but these blankets are needed by the shelters year-round. Even in the summer, the air conditioning used at the shelters make the cages ice-cold. As the animals become attached to their blanket, it provides year-round warmth and comfort. There is, unfortunately, a constant flow of animals into area shelters. This reaches a peak during the spring kitten-season, but there is also a need for more blankets year-round for new arrivals.

  5. Do you make dog blankets?
Yes, we make blankets is all sizes, for all sizes and types of animal shelter pets. Most of our guidelines suggest 20 inches square, since it is the most versatile size, but many of our volunteers make much larger blankets for puppies and dogs. We encourage everyone to follow their heart and make the size they feel called to make! We can find a home for any type and size of blanket!

  7. Do you have any patterns for making blankets?
Yes we do, and we try to add patterns as often as we can. Please check out our Free & Easy Patterns page on our website for pictures and patterns. These are all for making the smaller, more common 20 inches square blankets. The patterns can be doubled, as they are fairly simple, to make larger blankets for dogs.

  9. What type of yarn should I use for my blankets?
Any type of yarn is great, as long as it is washable. The blankets do get washed a lot at the shelters! We find the best yarn is sometimes the least expensive too. A regular skein of 4-ply yarn makes a gorgeous blanket.

  11. What color is best to use for the blankets?
Really any color is fine. The pets just love the softness and warmth of the blanket. If possible, white should be used sparingly, since the blankets are used quite a bit (every piece of dirt will show)! We also suggest that bright colors are used whenever possible. The shelters can have a dreary feel sometimes, so the blankets are a great way to brighten them up and add a bit of cheeriness for the families to see when they visit.

  12. Do you take fabric (thin) donations?
Yes and no...so please send an email to see if we can use the material. It depends upon whether or not we have a current volunteer who sews (most do not). We also use material to create our catnip bundles (cat toys) which we like to include in the boxes we ship to the shelters. Sometimes we can afford to purchase the other ingredients (catnip), sometimes we cannot. So please send an email to check and know that we greatly appreciate your willingness to help!
