"Wise and Foolish Dreamers" exhibition in Wales
Just to let readers know that a new Lottery-funded exhibition on Wales & the Spanish Civil War is in the process of being constructed for a provisional release date of 12th May 2007 at the Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea. There is, it seems, still a lot to do, but the plan is for the exhibition to tour Wales over the following twenty months. When matters are more solid I will let you know. Sadly I will be on the Ebro at Harry Dobson's place of burial with a group from the IBMT touring the battle of the Ebro! But you cannot be everywhere at once! Best wishes, Alan Warren PS The title of the exhibition is from John Pilger's speech at the IBMT commemoration in July 2005 and is also quoted in the biography of last IBer, Bob Peters- "A Bullet saved My Life" by Greg Lewis. |

This is part of one of the press releases written for the event. Turning a school playground into the scene of a devastating air-raid was one part of a project by Welsh schoolchildren which analyses a key moment in the country’s history. The pupils became actors, film-makers, book designers and historians as they discussed the motivations of the Welsh men and women who became caught up in the Spanish Civil War. Their work forms part of a major project, Wise and Foolish Dreamers, which will see an exhibition touring 20 major venues across Wales over the next two years. Information from the exhibition has also been turned into a book and will later become an education pack which can be used by teachers to explore the civil war and encourage pupils to learn about the conflict. The exhibition, book and video will be launched at the start of a special festival at the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea on May 11. It tells the background to the events which led to more than 170 people from Wales travelling to Spain after the civil war broke out in 1936. It highlights individual acts of bravery and the stories of the more than 30 Welshmen who died in the fighting. The exhibition also analyses Wales’ reputation as a welcoming nation, as well as concepts of patriotism, nationalism and heroism. The festival at Swansea will include live performances, interviews with friends and families of the Welsh International Brigadiers, poetry and prose, photography and painting. Wise and Foolish Dreamers – a Welsh Centre for International Affairs project - received a £48,000 grant to help teach pupils about Wales’ contribution to fighting fascism. The official exhibition launch will take place at 7pm on Friday, May 11, with Hywel Francis MP, at the Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea. |

Just a link to the events over 11th to 20th m,ay being held to launch the "Wise & Foolish Dreamers" exhibition at the Dylan Thomas centre. It seems that anyone can go for the opening night. Some very exciting films to watch-especially "The Colliers' Crusade". Sadly I will not be there as i am taking a group from the IBMT around the battle of the Ebro the first weekend, and for ome od reason the following weekend at Brunete talking about a possible plaque in Villanueva de Canada for the British battalion. But yes! I do have a real life aswell! http://www.swansea.gov.uk/media/pdf/c/o/Spanish_Civil_War_Festival.pdf If you want copies of Warren & Pell books (including the new papreback edition of Richard Baxell's excellent book "British Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War" at only £14.99!) they will be on sale at the Dylan Thomas Centre over the duration of the exhibition (it closes on May 29th). The exhibition will then tour round Wales over the next twenty months. If you know of any places that would like to exhibit it, then contact the organiser, Phil Cope (details in catalogue). Please give my apologies for not being there. Alan Warren |

I was at the evening in the Dylan Thomas Centre. It was an enjoyable evening and got to meet other people who had Welsh relatives in the SCW. My father and I are on a fact finding mission. We are trying to find out any information about my Great Uncle Sidney (Sid) James (Treherbert). I gather that he died in the Sierra Pandols 18th Sept 1938. Would also like to find out how/when exactly he got to Spain, how he died (very important), exactly where (Hill 666 ?)he died and any other information. I was told by members of the IBMT that there is access to some Moscow archives. Does anyone know how I go about trying to get information from these archives? Is there a contact? Any help greatly appeciated. Thanks Anthony |

Hello, Regarding Sid James, there is mention of Sid in Billy Griffith's unpublished memoirs. My list also states that he died on 18/9/38, but that would make the place of death probably in the Torre de Laval area near Corbera rather than the Sierra Pandols. As far as the Moscow archives are concerned, drop me a line and I can give you Jim Carmody's e mail address. Jim is the man who knows all as far as the British battalion is concerned and has access to copies of the Moscow archive. I am glad that the Wise and Foolish dreamers opening was a success. I will be grilling Mary Greening tomorrow when she comes to catalunya for a week. We will be driving around the Ebro battlefiled next week to explore where her father was stationed. Should be fun! Incidentally, following on from Angela Jackson's opening of the No Jubilem la Memoria exhibition on the IB in the Priorat region before, during and after the Battle of the Ebro, a local identified the well known batch of photographs taken of the British battalion with the Clement Attlee banner and the pennant held by Frank West and Edward Flanagan as having been taken at the nearbye village of Darmos, close to Marca. We have a date of the photographs having been taken from Edwin Greening's memoirs of 10th April 1938, and the place would fit in well with the immediate retreat behind the Ebro after the Great Retreats. |
