Vandalism on Hill 705

i am sorry to say that virtually all the memorials on Hill 705 on the Ebro battlefield have had a visit from some Falangists. This occured last friday and an article on the front page of either yesterday's or Monday's Diaril'Ebre (Tarragona)show the destruction.Nothing about the Quinta de Biberon monument, though). Most are spray painted with two Falangist yoke and arrow stencils aswell as "La Falange sigue en lucha", "Arriba Espana" and "1936-2007".

What is worse is that the British battalion memorial which was unveiled on May 7th 2005 by Alun Menai Williams has disappeared! A second plaque to Lister which was put up last April has also gone.

The alcaldes of the neighbouring towns are being very supportive and Angela Jackson will be visiting Hill 705 on Friday and talk with the police and other parties. We should have some photos to pass round after the weekend.

For the moment if anyone wishes to see the two pages then please e mail me. warren.ofbooks@virgin.net

You will be pleased to hear that the IBMT are going to make sure that the plaque will be replaced. I also understand that the alcalde of Pinell de Brai has offered to have a replacement made for us.

If anyone wishes to keep informed about developments please e mail me.

La versión en castellano y catalán de estos lamentables actos de fascismo vandálico se pueden leer en este enlace:

http://www.kaosenlared.net/noticia.php?id_noticia=40084

Re: Vandalism on Hill 705

Readers may be pleased to hear that the plaque on Hill 705 is very likely to be replaced thanks to the Catalan Generalitat on November 10th. This will be part of the No Jubilem la Memoria weekend which will also have events on the Friday evening and Sunday at Marca where the XV International Brigades were based before and after the battle of the Ebro. It should be a good do and if anyone wishes to go drop me a line and I will try and help arrange accomodation and transport down to Hill 705 from Marca. It is easy to get from Tarragona/Reus or Barcelona to Marca/Falset by train.

Re: Vandalism on Hill 705

Hi Alan,

As soon as you know more details about the events taking place in November, please let us know so we can meet there as many people as possible. The homage must be a big and international demostration against fascism and a citizen reply to the fascist vandals.

Salud!

Here is a provisional programme subject to approval by the IBMT committee. I would like to offer a tour to a few people who may wish to explore the area if your grasp of Catalan is not good enough to understand the lectures in the afternoon!

Re: Vandalism on Hill 705

At last I can post a message! Just to let everyone know that the events above are on and that there should be a good turnout from the UK including hopefully Bob Doyle and Jack Jones. Of course, Alun Menai Williams will not be there, sadly and I will probably be having a good cry by the end of the day! But that is life and death and it must be celebrated, remembered, ackowledged and rejoiced.

But in any case, I have offered to take people around the battlefield if they do not undertstand catalan on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons. So catch me if you would like to join a small group of people visitng the various places.

Indidentally I will be attending an event at the IB hospital at Benissa on November 3rd and 4th where a memorial to the IB medical services will be unveiled.
