Alun Menai Williams: "From the Rhondda to the Ebro"
"From the Rhondda to the Ebro", Pontypool: Warren and Pell, 2004.

Ola! Soy socialista en Gales. Gracias por la website. Poco espagnol, sorry. There are two books on the Welsh in the Civil War - Miners Against Fascism by Hywel Francis (now a Labour MP) and "A Most Expensive Prisoner - a biography of Tom Jones" by Jane Pugh (published by Gwasg Carreg Gwalch) Salut Lewis Jones Seren |

For our English speaker readers we have this short resume about Alun M Williams book: -------------------- "From the Rhondda to the Ebro" is the autobiography of the last surviving Welsh International Brigader, Alun Menai Williams. This book is more to do with Alun's life in the Welsh Valleys, London, Army life in the RAMC and his experiences in reaching Spain. Alun not only served in the trenches of Jarama but also at Belchite, Brunete, Jarama and was present when the International Brigades left Barcelona at the end of 1938. Serving as a paramedic in the Thaelmann, Abraham Lincoln, Washington and British battalions of the International Brigades, Alun's experiences in Spain were far reaching. The book includes a Foreward by film producer David Leach. ----------------------------- If you want to purchase a copy of this book and you cannot order it in your local bookshop, please visit the web page of Warren and Pell Publishing for more information: www.warrenandpellpublishing.co.uk SALUD! |

I've ordered a copy of the book. There's a picture of Alun Menai Williams looking very young and film-star handsome sitting in the sun in a chair with a kitten on his lap. Standing next to him is a short smiling figure in battledress with the butt of his rifle by his left foot. That figure is William "Billy" J Davies from Ton-y-Pandy. He was killed at Brunete just a few days later. Billy was my great-uncle. My father remembers him walking around the hills above the town, playing 'Cat and Dog', a game which involves striking a spindle-shaped wooden object with a pickaxe handle. It was a tough game and popular with the youths of the area. |
