Dundee Web Site

I have set up a site at http://groups.msn.com/DundeeandtheSpanishCivilWar
It deals with the links between the Scottish city of Dundee and the Spanish Civil War.

Re: Dundee Web Site

Thank you very much Mike!

It looks very interesting, congratulations for the good work. I will include your site in my links as soon as I can.

Could you please include in your website a photograph of the memorial in Dundee? I am very interested in reading the text of the memorial.

Kind regards!

Re: Dundee Web Site

Hi Antonio,
I noticed G.Poustie of Treorchy on the Rhondda memorial. We have a George Poustie recorded as a Dundee International Brigader. His details are as follows: George Sangster Poustie; 11 Fleuchar St, Dundee [Elizabeth & Mrs Elizabeth Poustie (his wife and mother) are listed at that address in the 1937 Electoral Roll]. Born 24th Jun 1904 in Glasgow, son of David Poustie and Elizabeth Jane McKenzie Sangster, the third of 6 siblings. Known as Geordie. A Master Stonemason and Builder and a staunch Trade Unionist during the 1930s. He was frequently at loggerheads with his employers on various building sites, campaigning for improved working conditions and wages.
Arrived in Spain, 2nd Apr 1937. Wounded at Brunete on 11th Jul 1937. Asked to be repatriated by British Consul at Valencia but was refused. Captured on 31st Mar 1938 at Calaceite. Imprisoned at San Pedro de Cardenas. Released and repatriated 24th Oct 1938. At the start of WWII he set up business in the building trade and built many air-raid shelters in and around Dundee. He married Isabella Lawson Grant, 25th March 1950 (no children). Died 22nd Dec 1969. He still has family living in Dundee.(Sources; Jim Carmody and John Poustie (relative), Middlesbrough).
I was wondering how he came to be listed on the Rhondda memorial. John Poustie, a family historian, reckons that there weren't any other G.Pousties around at the time.

Re: Dundee Web Site

Sorry, it's not his wife and mother; it would have been his sister and mother. Mike

George Poustie

George Sangster Poustie; Contact address on enlisting with the International Brigades; 11 Fleuchar St, Dundee [Elizabeth & Mrs Elizabeth Poustie listed as living there in 1938 Dundee Electoral Roll, almost certainly his mother and sister]. Believed to have been working in Treorchy when he enlisted in the Brigades, so his name appears on the Rhondda Memorial, which lists all those who fought from the area rather than just those who died in Spain.
Arrived in Spain, 2nd Apr 1937. Wounded at Brunete on 11th Jul 1937. Asked to be repatriated by the British Consul at Valencia but was refused. Captured on 31st Mar 1938 at Calaceite and imprisoned at San Pedro de Cardenas. Released and repatriated 24th Oct 1938. In 1940 he set up business in the building trade in Dundee with his brother John W. Poustie and, amongst other things, built many air-raid shelters in and around the city. The company was named 'Poustie & Wilson' and was based at 209 Strathmartine Road. George married Isabella Lawson Grant on 25th March 1950 (no children) and died on 22nd Dec 1969 (his brother John had died aged 45 in December 1951). He still has family living in Dundee. (Sources; Jim Carmody and John Poustie, Middlesbrough).
