New Zealanders in the Spanish Civil War

Dear friend of the history of the Spanish Civil War

The role of New Zealanders in the epoch-making conflict in Spain is little known and almost unresearched, but that is about to change. On 4-5 November 2006, the first-ever seminar on New Zealand’s contribution to the Spanish Civil War will take place at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand.

Over the weekend, a panel of local and international speakers will talk about the New Zealanders who fought in the International Brigade, those who worked as non-combatants, the actions of the government, the Catholic Church and NGOs towards the war, and the contribution of New Zealand poets, artists, writers, musicians and other cultural workers.

The seminar is being organised by the Trade Union History Project, with the support of the History Department, Victoria University and the NZ Film Archive. A festival of films made during and about the Spanish Civil War will take place over the week of the seminar. The seminar presentations will later be edited and published in book form.

Please pass this notice on to all who may be interested in contributing to or attending the seminar. Further details, including a full seminar programme, will be provided as soon as they become available. For more information, contact the seminar organiser:

Re: New Zealanders in the Spanish Civil War

Thank you very much for your message.

It is true that the role played by New Zelanders in the Spainsh Civil War is little known, but I am happy to see how this is starting to change.

It seems you are going to have a very interesting calendar of activities and of course I would be delighted if you could send back more information and even an account of the whole event. I am afraid that living in Europe means that is not possible for me to attend this time!

Carry on with the good work,
SALUD!
