16 th July 2006: New memorial to the IB in Wales
I have just received this message about the unveiling of a new memorial dedicated to the International Brigades in Wales, please read it carefully and see if you can help in any way, such as making a donation, forwarding this message to people who may be interested or able to help, attending the unveiling ceremony, etc... ------------------------------------------------- Dear friend, History shows that the Spanish Civil war of 1936-9 was the turning point in the fight to stop the spread of fascism. The struggle in Spain resonated throughout Wales, particularly in the South Wales coalfield communities. Many Welsh miners and trade unionists left their families to go to Spain, to defend democracy against the Fascist dictator Franco and his allies, Hitler and Mussolini. and some of them never returned, their blood mingled with the soil of Spain. We intend to place a plaque in the Big Pit mining museum in Blaenavon, which will remind the many visitors from all over the world of the ideals that inspired the people of Wales to answer the call of freedom. The plaque is planned to be unveiled on Sunday July 16, in an opening which will also include a display of photographs documenting Wales’ unique contribution to the Spanish Civil War. £500 is urgently needed to fund the plaque and the event. Any donation you might be able to make towards the costs, big or small, will be gratefully received. Please support us in whatever way you can. Yours sincerely, Ray Davies Cheques can be made payable to "South Wales IBMT" and sent to: Ray Davies 172 Pandy Road Bedwas Caerphilly CF83 8EP |

Hello I have a very clear memory of Sam Mainwring (junior) in Neath asking Alun Thomas (IB recruiter)"Promise me that you will find out what happened to the boys I sent to Spain" I remember a very unhappy I.B. Political Commissay staying with Alun. So I suspect that the Sidney Lloyd-Jones listed in the Burry Port Memorial may have been using an alias. Because Sam did tell me about how to contrive a safe alias. Sam may then not have disclosed the alias he used himself for fear that the Police were still looking for that trouble maker in South Africa who had been organising mixed race Trade Unions. Sam Barlin fits the description he gave on making up an alias. So I write to ask what words you intend to put on the memorial. As Sidney was such a late notification, I wonder if there are any more of Sam's boys who should be rememberd. Ilyan |

Everybody is welcome to assist and pay tribute to the volunteers of the antifascist struggle. --------------------------------------- Este evento del día 16 en la mina de "Big Pit" servirá también debido a las recientes y trágicas circunstancias como homenaje a Alun Menai Williams, brigadista internacional. Hello. I am trying to find out where exactly a relative of mine died during the Spanish Civil War. My relatives name was Sidney(Sid)James from Treherbert. His brother Archie was supposed to go to Spain instead but was about to get married and decided to stay behind. Sid went instead. Sid left for Spain without telling his mother. Can anyone help? |

Hello Anthony, According to the Roll of Honour of the British Battalion, your relative Sidney James died in the Battle of the Ebro, on 18th September 1938 at "Sierra Pándols", a mountain area in South Catalonia near the river Ebro. That is the link to the Roll of Honour: http://www.international-brigades.org.uk/british_volunteers/roll_of_honour.htm Also there is more info in a book titled "Miners Against Fascism", by Hywel Francis and available at Warren and Pell Publishing: http://www.warrenandpellpublishing.co.uk/ Salud and good luck! |
