Peace Pledge non Signing in Neath

I remember a table outside the Cambrian in Neath where women were collecting signatures for the Peace Pledge. Lots of women were signing, but no men. There was at least one Quaker lady, and two Communists May Llewellyn and May Thomas.

They were lamenting that no men would sign when they saw a man approaching who they thought really would sign. But he crossed the road some thirty yards away, May Llewellyn detatched herself to fetch him.

He stood with his hands flat on the table and read the Pledge. Then he said "I really believe in this, this I would die for. But I cannot sign it, I am off to Spain next week."

Unfortuneately forty years later neither of the Mays could remember his name.
