Re: Alun Menai Williams. Salud y viva la Libertad

Please find below a fitting tribute to Alun by his good friend Greg Lewis. I think that it sums up the man in a fitting way. Those who had the privilege of meetinghim must surely feel the same way. Thank you Greg.

The last of a special breed of men
Western Mail, July 5th 2006

Alun Menai-Williams, the last member of the International Brigades that fought in the Spanish Civil War and lived in Wales, died at the weekend. Here, in a personal tribute, Greg Lewis remembers this remarkable man
ALUN Menai-Williams made the news because he was one of the last surviving British veterans of the Spanish Civil War.
But he was also a father, grandfather and brother, and a friend to many.
On Sunday, he died at the age of 93. He'd had a remarkably full life. But his death still left those who knew him with that sickening, empty feeling of the bereaved.
Alun was in his early 20s when he served with the International Brigades. He worked as a medic on rocky, unforgiving battlefields. He saved friends' lives, and saw others die. He was torpedoed on the way to Spain, bombed when he got there and shot in the leg.
I only got to know Alun in what was to be the last year of his life. We met once or twice a week at his house. We talked, drank tea and ate biscuits.
The last time I saw him he was fit and well from a long stay with a friend in Spain. He'd put on a stone, was proud to be able to walk to the kitchen unaided - "I will make you tea this time, Greg" - and came with me into Barry, where he had lived for more than 60 years.
I went away, returned a week later and my friend was gone. There were 56 years between Alun and me, but they meant nothing. We were friends.
We talked about everything from the Danish newspaper cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed to Google in China to a shared favourite actor, Robert Ryan, as we put the world to rights.
New topics keep occurring to me for conversations we will now never hold.
It was important, I think, that our conversations somehow moved away from Spain, even though he and Spain were a part of each other, and always will be.
But, despite the horror, it was only two years of his life. He said he did not want to be defined only by the Spanish Civil War.
He featured in documentaries for BBC Wales TV and radio, but wished people to know that he lived on after Spain.
And there was so much more to say.
There were even other narrow escapes, including a crash landing at Talbenny in Pembrokeshire during the Second World War when he was a passenger on a Liberator bomber. "Lady luck was at my side," Alun winked.
All the same the odds must have seemed stacked against him leading a long and happy life and dying peacefully in a white hospital ward. But that is what he did.
He met his wife Goldie on the beach at Barry as German bombers came to attack the docks. Everyone ran, but Alun told Goldie it was safer to stay on the sand. They watched the raid together and she asked him how he'd known what to do. He explained about Spain.
They spent 55 years together and proudly watched their son Robert and his wife Jenny bring up their grandchildren.
Goldie died in 1998. Alun was distraught, but "knew I couldn't just sit in my chair, crying".
He remembered Goldie's suggestion that he write down his adventures. His memories became a wonderful book, From The Rhondda To The Ebro.
Soon after I met Alun we started talking about a Penarth-born brigadier, Bob Peters, who now lives in Kent. Little was known about Bob, but Alun wanted to know. I met Bob and took messages between them. They both so much wanted to meet, those last two Welshmen who fought for the Spanish Republic. How sad now that they won't.
I was only one of the many people who got to know Alun in these last years. I don't know them all but can imagine the shining blaze of light he brought into their lives. With his death, that light has not gone out for me. There may not have been an ounce of what people call "religion" between us. But in my heart I sense that something of my friend remains.
Farewell, Alun. Salud. So many loved you, and you live on in their love.

Re: Alun Menai Williams. Salud y viva la Libertad

I'm glad to see that Alun touched so many lives. Even though I barely knew him for a year or so over the phone and e-mail - the 93 year old Welshman had a profound effect on me! I'm also honored that this site linked to my interview/biography of Alun Menai Williams (thank you webmaster).

Re: Alun Menai Williams.

Re: Alun Menai Williams. Salud y viva la Libertad

In the following link we can read Alun's obituary published in The Times:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,60-2308812.html

This is a quote of the text:

"Neither arrest in France nor being torpedoed at sea could stop Alun Menai-Williams from volunteering to help to defend the Spanish Republican Government against General Franco’s uprising. A man of political convictions forged in the poverty of the South Wales valleys, he participated as a medical attendant in many of the chief battles of the Spanish Civil War(...)"
