Support the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Monument!

On November 14, 2006, the San Francisco Port Commission formally voted to approve the installation of a large, dramatic monument to honor The Abraham Lincoln Brigade. The monument, constructed of open steelwork and onyx, is 30 feet long and 8 feet high and will be erected at the city’s historic Embarcadero, opposite the Ferry Building, a location with pedestrian traffic numbering in the tens of thousands each day.

This will be the first major national monument to honor the nearly 3,000 men and women from the United States who journeyed to Spain in 1936-1938 to defend the elected government from a military insurrection supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Historians consider the Spanish Civil War the first battle of World War II.

The memorial’s translucent panels will be incised with photographs and short inscriptions. The archival photos, among them Robert Capa’s iconographic images of the Spanish Civil War, are combined with poetry and text that depicts the epic struggle between democracy and fascism. The monument’s designers, Ann Chamberlain and Walter Hood, have previously completed projects at the California Supreme Court, the San Francisco Main Library, San Francisco’s new deYoung Museum, and the George Washington Carver Memorial in St. Louis.

Funding of the national monument is organized by the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (ALBA) and the Bay Area Veterans and Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, who spearheaded the appeal for the memorial since 2000. We have already raised $150,000, half of the necessary funds, to complete and dedicate the memorial during the Spring of 2007.

Upon completion of the project, ALBA will gift the monument to the city of San Francisco , along with an endowment for its continued maintenance. ALBA will also build a “virtual monument” on its website—www.alba-valb.org—which will provide historical information about the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and the Spanish Civil War, local maps of nearby historic labor sites, guides to related monuments around the world, links to the extensive ALBA historical collection, and educational materials for teachers and students who visit the site.

Your generous tax-deductible contribution will help complete the project and dedicate the monument on schedule. We welcome “In Memorium” contributions, which will be listed on the website. ALBA is a bona fide non-profit educational organization.
