The cause is the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) from Win 2003 SP1. Try this: 1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK. 2. Click the Advanced tab, click Performance, and then click Settings. 3. In Performance Options, click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Add. 4. In the Open dialog box, locate and then click the program (mars.exe). 5. Click Open, click Apply, and then click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK.

Luckily I read this post before I ever installed, so I was ready for it! But now I'm running into this problem . . . We have installed MARS on a production server and the developers are all going to use the same user account to manage the schedules. So when I installed MARS, I temporarily promoted that user account to an Administrator, set the DEP to add MARS as an exclusion, opened MARS just fine. Then I demoted the account again to a regular user. I think I tested the login again from the console, but I can't remember. When they log on using Remote Desktop and the user account I want them to use, they get this same problem of "Application has generated an exception." To test this, I tried several times using Remote Desktop from one of the developer's computers . . . if that user account is not an administrator, MARS won't run. If it is an administrator, MARS will run. And as a side note - if the account is not an administrator, it cannot see the DEP settings; when it is an administrator, it can see the DEP settings, and they are correct, to exclude MARS. I really do not want to make the user account an administrator long-term due to a number of security reasons. Is there any way around this? Thanks, this forum has been helpful on my other questions! -LM |

Firstly, MARS is not fully compatible with Remote Desktop. Open the Helpfile. On the contents page there is a section there about use of TS, Remote Desktop etc. Read this section and then decide if you still want to use TS/RD. The next version of MARS will be fully compatible. This is expected towards the latter half of this year. Secondly, you must ensure that you have installed the very latest build of MARS. Some changes were added a couple of months back which make it more compatible with DEP (if it is not enforced by group or other system policies). Since the changes were made there has been a 95% drop in the number of reported DEP issues. Did you instsall MARS whilst you were physically at the server? Did you take away DEP from MARS whilst you were physically on the server? If not, then you are only removing it for the users of TS/RD sessions. You need to make the change physically at the server (or using some other remote control tool e.g VNC, PcAnywhere etc. I would recommend that you log into the server as the LOCAL administrator, re-install the latest MARS, set up DEP to exclude MARS (if required), restart and then try your RD/TS sessions again. If the problem still continues then you need to look at your system security policies etc to ensure that you switch on the DEP tab for normal users. I believe you can set DEP to "Opt Out" level, or "Always Off" in group policy, but I am not exactly sure where you would find these settings. Your sys admin should be able to help you with this. |
