cleaning HELP
how do you get that big chunk of junk out of the middle of a gourd if you only have a small hole, like for a bird house ? |

Hi Gourd Crazy, I saw your post about cleaning gourds with small openings. Hopefully this information will be useful to you. I create rattles. Sometimes the gourds have such small openings you can only get an icepick or something similar into it. My trick is to fill the gourd with water through its opening, then take the ice pick and gently swirl it around inside getting the ball of pulp good and wet. Then I let it rest with the water in it. After 15-20 minutes, I shake out what I can, get back in with the ice pick and gently break up all that pulp until it is small enough to fall out the opening. I empty and refill with water and use the icepick as many times as I have to. Once the gourd is cleaned out to your satisfaction, I sit it out in the sun to dry again before I work with it anymore. After it dries, more pulp may fall out. Have fun! Debby |
