finishes for leather dyed gourds

Hi,

My husband and I dye gourds with leather dye but this is our problem.....anything that we've tried to finish them with has caused the dye to move and stains the brush. We've used waterbased finishes such as Minwax, also used laquers as well as oilbased varnishes. Does anyone have any suggestions.....what do you all use to give your gourds that lovely finish over leather dyes?
I look forward to hearing from you. Please mention the leather dye on the email so I don't think you're spam!

Re: finishes for leather dyed gourds

Hi
I am new to gourd art but Welburn Gourds seems to have a great selection of gourd inks and finishes. The inks are much more forgiving than leather dyes and can be blended very easily! If you are anywhere in Ca. it would be worth your time to go to thefarm and attend one of their free classes. You have an opportunity to use all the tools and products. It has gotten me interested and I am taking my first real class tomorrow.

Re: finishes for leather dyed gourds

Dear Jan,

Leather dye finishes for gourds that work and successfully finish the dye can be very beautiful. Some gourds I've seen have a remarkable shine that sticks in my memory all these years, with all I've been through. Sometimes a finish is just the perfect thing to make you believe in gourds and life again. Shiny, lasting, resounding. I hope that you find the right finish.

Gourdially,

Re: finishes for leather dyed gourds

I know exactly what you are talking about..I ruined one! I am still using leather dyes but give them a day or two to "set up" and then use a spray finish like polyurathane or varnish. The first coat should be very light and then use subsequent heavier coats. I have found that if you let the dyes set for several days you can use polish and brush applied coatings but the spray just seems safer and it does give a nice finish if you get a good application. Hope this helps and good luck.
