Yogic and Jewish texts

Shalom,

I have been practicing yoga for about 18 months and I am a trained Jewish educator currently serving as Director of Jewish Learning in a Manhattan synagogue. I feel immersed in two separate worlds. I would like to begin joining my worlds, my passions, and would like to base this union in text. Are there opportunities in New York City (not the suburbs or CT) to begin a comparison of Jewish teachings and Yoga teachings?

Re: Yogic and Jewish texts

There are many similarities between Jewish and Yoga philosophy.

Be aware, that in the opinion of more stringent Jews, any comparision is asur, forbidden, and that it contaminates Judaism.

Taken with a grain of salt, however, there are some interesting insights to be found in a comparison of the two.

My website http://www.torahveda.org explores some of the comparisons.

Re: Yogic and Jewish texts

Dear Dena,
I don't know if you have found your answer, but I understand what you are going through. I have been part of a group studying with Diane Bloomfield (author of TorahYoga) and Rabbi Myriam Klotz (with the Institute for Jewish Spirituality). It is a two year program that puts Yoga and Jewish Text together. The program is Yoga and Jewish Spirituality Teacher Certification.

Go to this page:

I hope you have found an answer, if not, I know this is a wonderful program. Your welcome to contact me for more information.

May you find peace on your path of searching.
Sharon
