"Banned" shouldn't be a word we have to deal with. Books should not be banned, period. Having said that, it does get complicated when it's a school assignment because the book then becomes a requirement which takes away the element of choice. Adding to the confusion, anyone (or anyparent) could object to the content of nearly any book, so teachers regularly skate on thin ice.
Personally, I think Huck Finn is a fantastic book, and I would not object to nearly any book my kids' teachers assigned -- because I trust the teachers and because I read what my kids are reading so that we can discuss the content and language.
I feel for the teachers. |
