Re: Re: Dapsone Syndrome

Becky,

On annie's comments - deaths usually only occur for those with favor disease - ie people who have reaction to favor or broad beans (typically people of medeteranian descent) - and those with significant imparement of bodly functions (eg elderly.)

A very large number of people have a response to dapsone, typically just anaemia - but often much more. Dapsone is a drug that you should only take under professional medical care - ie taking weekly full blood counts for the first few weeks to check for changes in red blood cell numbers and changes in liver function. People with favor disease pretty much find out immediately they have a problem.

Dapsone is however a miracle drug. It is an antibiotic with lots of very useful alternative uses that still beat others hands down.

Here it is as listed in the FAQs, Becky.

Dapsone syndrome: a 'dapsone syndrome' may occur after 3-6 weeks treatment. Symptoms include rash, fever or change in blood cells. It is important to seek medical help immediately as severe skin reactions, inflammation of the liver, kidney damage and mental illness have occurred. Some deaths have been reported.
