Hi there,

Quite probably the flare-ups are due to the small amounts of gluten that your father's taking. The diet has to be strict. My specialist told me that small amounts of gluten can stay in the system for up to a year.

Sometimes, flares can occur for apparently no reason at all. I think hormonal changes can influence DH and it is known to come and go in severity during a person's lifetime. Thus, a person might find the need to increase their dosage of dapsone at these times.

Even people maintaining a strict gf diet can experience flare-ups of the rash. Converseley, a patient can sometimes eat gluten and not show symptoms. It's a very temperamental condition and there still needs to be a lot more research done to fully understand it.

Best wishes.

Annie

My father has DH. He is in his mid 80's. He takes dapsone and maintains as gluten-free diet as possible. However, he is currently experiencing a flare-up of the itchy blisters. Any ideas about what causes these flare-ups??
