You are sitting reading a book on a park bench( for example) someone comes along, hits you over the head and steals your handbag ( or whatever). This is an actual event and not projection. You have NOT projected 'a mugger' onto someone, a fellow human being. We all have choice - they have CHOSEN to do this to you. For this instant, and it is only an example, they have CHOSEN to favour their will over your own - you have not projected and made it happen.

This situation includes no interaction between the two people (until the thief strikes). Is avoiding all interaction with others the only way to be sure we're not projecting?

Even if you interact with someone, that doesn't give them the right to choose to exercise their will over yours for your negative effect and that is not projection.
