George Lucas Continues His 'Heroic' Journey

For those of you who like me are students {and perhaps disciples} of Joseph Campbell, and believe in
the value of mythology in the spiritual quest, George Lucas' life story continues to follow the pattern of the hero myth.

The hero comes back to his ordinary world, but his adventure would
be meaningless unless he brought back the elixir, treasure, or some
lesson from the special world

Lucas' elixir is that knowledge of the creative Self, which is the true expression of oneself and the true desire of the soul {expressing oneself creatively}. He is sharing this knowledge, the boones
of the journey, with
others with his recent pledge of $175 million to So.
California University's School of Cinematic Arts. And with it a pledge to help others discover the lure and power of creativity.

Campbell taught that the creative Self is the 'Holy Grail' of a truly Individuated life. When one returns with the boones from the journey, he/she is to share the boones and knowledge. From the influence of Star Wars to his influence at So Cal, Lucas is on course as prescribed in the hero pattern. And it is acheived with a spiritual reverence that is guided by spirit and not by ego.

From the Monomyth
Fredom to Live

With the journey now complete, the hero has found true freedom, and can turn his efforts to helping or teaching humanity.

In the later novels in the Starwars Saga, Luke opens a Jedi academy and starts to teach future Jedi.

In The Lord of the Rings, the hobbits become prominent citizens of the Shire with the wisdom they have gained. Aragorn reigns as King for many decades and ushers in a new age of peace and the rebuilding of Middle-earth. He then starts a family with Arwen, his Queen.

In "The Neverending Story" Bastian feels more confident when he returns, and prepares to help other humans reach Fantastica.

Here is an article from the LA Times that tells more about Lucas recent gift.
