hi all,
just thought i would post an interesting experience i had with regard to how dreams work,
a friend of mines daughter(aged 10) was having a bad time with nightmares about a crocodile in her room, she was having a lot of trouble getting to sleep, for the fear of the crocodile,
by association, she said it reminded her of the crocodile from peter pan,
it was the tick tock that was the cause,
in her room she could hear the grandfather clock ticking in the hall,
this was relocated out of ear shot,
she has never had the nightmare since,
i thought it a good example of how dreams can assimilate sounds and tranfer them into an image.

Steve,
Excellent observation. Just as with a full bladder and the need to urinate while dreaming, assimilated sounds can affect the dreaming mind. It would have been most difficult to explain the fear of the crocodile with the grandfather clock's 'tick tock' sound, or the movie itself. There must have been as association from the sound that the little girl's unconscious tied to the croc. I would be interested to see if there were other associations or images that would explain the association between the two. Was there something within the Peter Pan movie that tied with the clock? Also what made the girl's parent think about the clock as being a source of her nightmares? We know the consclusion was accurate because the nightmares ended when the noise was no longer within range of sound for the girl.

hi gerard,
from what i can gather,
the little girl was frightened of the crocodile because,
you only know its coming when you hear the ticking,
i don't think it was anything too complicated,
just reminded her of the tick tocking crocodile in peter pan.
remove the tick tock, remove the fear.
