Moving to Toronto, hopefully

Hello, my Canadian born husband and I would like to move to Toronto later in the year. We've been there a couple of times and LOVED EVERY MINUTE!! We're very concerned about the global economic crisis and how it will effect us in terms of finding employment. My husband has ten years experience working as a computer technician/systems administrator. He now works for a company installing satellite systems as he wanted a change. He wouldn't be fussy in finding a particular job in Toronto - he wouldn't mind being a courier if that pays the bills! I have a few years experience working in Vet. clinics as a secretary/receptionist, and would be perfectly happy working in Pet Smart or something similar. Should we worry about finding employment, or would this only be a problem for workers in the auto industry?

Please advise,

Thankyou...

P.S I LOVEEEEEEE your site. Very useful information that sends out positive vibes!

Re: Moving to Toronto, hopefully

Hi there Elena,

Thanks - glad you like the site :).

So - you say you'd like to move to TO later this year?? How FAB that you can bypass the visa application process by virtue of your Canadian Husband!! Lucky you!! You're right - TO is indeed a fabulous place to live and work, and I've also loved every minute of my time here!

With reference to the "global economic crisis" you mentioned, I'm afraid it is just that, and as such is most definitely effecting Canada as far as job losses are concerned!

Here are a few snippets I've pulled from various newssources:

**************************************
6 Feb 09 : The recession hit home last month, as a massive 129,000 workers joined the unemployed, more than half of those in Ontario. The province's unemplyment rate rose to 8%, up from 7.2% in December. Across the country, it was the worst monthly employment drop in at least three decades, topping figures seen in either of the two previous recessions in the 1980s and 1990s.

Since October, the country has lost 213,000 jobs, wiping out last year's gains. Economists had been forecasting a much tamer number. The expectation was for a loss of 40,000... this is three times the expectation.

It was the largest employment decrease since the Statistics Canada agency began keeping what it described as comparable figures in 1976. Almost all the jobs were full-time and were mostly in a battered manufacturing sector that has been most affected by the severe downturn in the United States.

Job losses were also recorded in the following industries: furniture, computer and electronic, non-metallic mineral product, electrical equipment, appliance and components, clothing manufacturing, transportation and warehousing, business, building and other support services.

The only industry with notable gains was health care and social assistance, which saw a boost of 31,000 jobs.

**************************************
So.... bit doom and gloomy over all, BUT, that said - it would seem that your attitude of being willing to do anything will mean that you will in fact find work as there are definitely jobs to be had regardless! The only "problem" with finding jobs in careers you're not experienced in is that they do seem to be very gung ho on previous experience here (and particularly Canadian experience) and so you may well find yourself in a more junior position than you are used to.

Bottom line though is that Life over here is fantastic - the economic crisis is effecting everywhere so you're no worse off here and the lifestyle is soooooo fantastic. AND of course you could always go back since you have dual citizenship between you!! What have you got to lose?? Nothing!! :D Get yourselves over here PRONTO I'd say!! I honestly don't think you'd regret it. (Unless possibly, you're very reluctant to leave family behind - this seems to be the most common reason for emigratees to return back home from what I can see)

Hope this helps and answers your question somewhat? Best thing to do is just make use of Google and reseach, research, research! ( eg. do a google search on "Canadian Job Losses 2009" for more info etc.)

Anything I can do to assist from this end - just let me know!

Best of luck and keep me posted!
Emma xx
PS - is your Husband from Toronto??

Re: Moving to Toronto, hopefully

Just read this on yahoo news too!

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Canadian economy will have a difficult 2009 and jobs data due later this week will be the latest evidence that it is being hit hard by the global economic slowdown, Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Tuesday.

The market expects the data to show the economy shed 52,500 jobs in February after a drop of 129,000 jobs in January.

"These numbers are not likely to be good," Flaherty told the Senate's finance committee.

The key jobs report follows data released last week that showed the economy shrank sharply during the fourth quarter of 2008. Another contraction during the first quarter of 2009 is considered almost a certainty.

"Canada entered the recession in a relatively strong position but we are facing a very difficult year in 2009," said Flaherty. "We will see our domestic economy deteriorate, it is deteriorating as we sit here."
