When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support,  to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are.  They are there for the reason you need them to be.  Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end.  Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.  Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.  What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done.  The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

There are many different responses to crisis. Most survivors have intense feelings after a traumatic event but recover from the trauma; others have more difficulty recovering — especially those who have had previous traumatic experiences, who are faced with ongoing stress, or who lack support from friends and family — and will need additional help.

Not much use of left leg

Hi,

I've had polio since I was 6 months old and I'm from Singapore. This gives me very little use of my left leg. I can cycle alright but have always wanted to have some power between my legs.

I'm wondering if there is any help/ advice someone here can provide for someone in my condition to ride a motorcycle. By this I mean a two-wheeler.

Any help will be helpful. Thank you.

VJ

Re: Not much use of left leg

VJ, here is what I found, and there are some links in this forum to allow modifications to just about any motorcycle out their, you might try to contact Adaptive Engineering: www.adaptivemotorcycles.com/pg2.html ,they may be able to send you the parts you need. Try Kicktronic and Translogic for modifications too, They are here in the forum also. Hope this all helps VJ...See below websites..Hey give us your age and Ideas of what bike your intending to ride too..ok! This would help. I pulled some info for motorcyclist license in Singapore too for you, that is your dtill over seas...
You might have this info already at hand.

Motorcycle Licenses
If you have an international bike licence or a foreign bike licence, the Traffic Police can help you convert this to a Singapore one. You should be aware that Singapore bike licenses are divided into three categories (see below). Regardless of your foreign licence rating, you will only be issued a Class 2B licence, although there have been exceptions. See web site below for more information on the procedure.

Info
Class 2A
to ride bikes up to 401 cc

Class 2B
to ride bikes up to 201cc

Class 2
unlimited

Please note that battery-operated bikes (electric driven bikes) with a maximum power output above 200 watts are classed as motorcycles. You could be fined S$ 5,000 or jailed for 6 months if you are caught using an unregistered motorized bicycle as every make and model must now be auhtorised by an insepction center. Scooters are not allowed on public roads, pavements next to public roads, in public parks and in HDB estates. Riders not complying with the safety rules on public roads may be fined up to S$ 1,000 or jailed up to a maximum of three months. See web site below on motorized bicyles for more information or call the Hotline at Tel: 1800 2255 582 or the traffic police at Tel: 6547 0000.

Buying a motorcycle
While the main impediment to buying a car is the high asking price, which is due to the COE (Certificate of Entitlement) the COE for bikes is much much lower, and for new bikes is currently SGD 1. You can get a good idea of the bike buying process below:

There is a wide variety of bikes available here, although Japanese bikes predominate, Honda especially. Regarding dealers for used bikes and mechanics, these vary in terms of service, and depending on whom you talk to. These judge you very much by how you behave when you first turn up on their doorstep, and what you need of them. You may find it easier to go to someone who has been recommended to you.

Re: Re: Not much use of left leg

As far as use of leg that is a very different for each person. So I will explain what I know. I am a left below the knee amputation with a Harmoney prostetic leg. I drive a 2006 Custom Fatboy for me to drive the recomendations were made as follows:
lower it to aid in you center of balance
change the kickstand so you can catch it
electronic shift/it still uses clutch (Pingel or Klicktronic) I use Kiltronic, my friend who still races dirt bikes uses it and he is above the knee left side.
Also boot gaurds to keep boot from slipping off and not knowing it.
Know my brother is paralized waist down and he uses a trike, he has had VW custom, Susuki with Lehman trike conversion, now a Valkarie with I believe a motor trike conversion out of Texas. He uses a rocker shifter and has trained himself to do it although he can not feel it. He straps his wheelchair to the back of it.
So several things mater when you say weakness. Have you tried going into a motorcycle dealer and sitting on one and trying to see if you can pull it up to center balance it?
Part of my therapy from my bike accident was going in sitting on it and pulling up and down to learn it.
If you go and find you can not pull it do not be discouraged. My brothers trikes are awesome and his VTX (I ama true Harley Girl) is fast as heck and sharp. Hardly a girly bike. It is streamline and looks like a racer. He does not want to be associated with being paralizd when he drives.
Hope tht helps.

Re: Re: Re: Not much use of left leg

Hi Cat and Gary

Thanks for all your responses and encouragment. I'm not sure how it is in the USA or other European countries. You need a license here before you can ride on the streets and the assessment is quite stringent and on bike the assessment centre provides. Do you need one where you are from?

I had inquired some years ago here and the only thing possible was a bike attached with a side car? I had even considered the Piaggio scooters which don't have any foot controls but then there's the test. I have tried balancing bikes though and I can do it but not with perfect balance so I don't think I'll manage to pass the test even if they allowed me to take a test on my own modified two-wheeler.

Maybe I'll visit the USA to satisfy my dream of riding a two-wheeler.....if no proof of licenses are required?
