The Smith guy you will probably recognize by the tailights of his malibu!!!!!

Paul Smith and his Dad own a bracket racing team the is well known throughout the united states as well as several other countries. They have 7 cars and race in classes ranging in NHRA, from Stock classis to top sportsman, to Top eliminator and even have a top alcohol car. Paul and his dad make a living on racing! They have a 300 acre+ ranch with thier own
1/4 mile track for testing. Hell, they even have a timing systems, clocks and tree! Several years ago, they bought a cargo plane from a military auction (The dad is a pilot) and they use the plane to haul thier race cars when they race somewhere greater than 4 or 5 hundred miles. They won a big big money race last year in Aruba where they cashed in for over 250 thousand in bracket race, of course the entry fee was $10,000.00 just to enter and $6,000.00 buy backs! So what Paul does is race around here just for pleasure, just to get out of thier shop. Otherwise he is racing as his livelyhood. Yep, he is a legend up in the midwest.

Quick story, back in 2004, in Mississippi at a ten thousand dollar race Scotty Richards was in the finals with Paul. Scotty had two tech cards and Paul had one. They were racing for $10 thousand first place and $7,500 second. We were in the staging lanes and Scotty said "Lets split this winning money up". Paul turned toward him, pulled down his shades, grinned and said in a mild voice,.."Son, if you wanna split go on down the road and find a Dairy queen, they got all the banana split you want." Paul then said, "If you want to race, lets race for it all, and I will let you have your two cards. Scotty said "Bring it!" Well, Paul popped off a .001 light and ran dead on with a 2!. Of course he won that one,...final race Paul pops of a .0002,.(Perfect light) and runns dead on again with a 1. It was all over but the crying!....I will never forget that Banana split line. "Who goes **** near perfect on the tree in a $17,500.00 race? I will tell ya, a cool calm professional drag racer,..Paul Smith.

Yea that was back in the day of that Gatorade sponsorship, things have since went south.

I have one of the original "racing Cards" autographed by Paul Smith. I also have an original painting of Paul Smith in the winners circle at Indy in 2002, this is where he won two different classes at the National Event. This painting was done by Eagleton Humperdink (famous artist from Europe) I paid $12,800.00 for the painting of him at a auction held several months later. The painting depicks Paul in the winner circle with two different cars in his driving suit giving the thumbs up. I still belong to his fan club and the $100.00 membership is a real bargin. When I first joined I got and autographed "Racing card", an autographed t-shirt, an autographed checkered racing fan, a dinner with Paul at my favorite resturaunt an d last bu not least a sit down portrait of me and Paul standing near his car.

Rumor is: a new sponsorship is in the wind from "Royal purple". there may be truth to it because Paul was at the paint shop last week talking to them about the different shades of purple.
