Half awake dream

I wanna know if anybody can explain a half awake dream I ahd. It started out with some light to moderate breathing and it felt like I was starting to watch a movie screen out of the bottom of my left eye only. I kept watching as it was coming toward me flashing pictures of old Colonial pics ol Van Gogh paintings. Civil war pictures, Pyramids. Then it started going thru like a firey tunnel with realistic fire balls going past me, Then devil faces, evil faces started coming towards me then it opened up to a bigger firey area and it was just like a room around me, Now by this time my breathing has increased rapidly my heart was starting to beat faster. It started going thru that layer of fire and went in to another fire and it got down thru the last part and it almost felt like I hit bottom and it was fire and my heart was beating almopst out of my chest I was breathing rapidly and it felt like it was trying to consume my body and it was warm. There is more bits and pieces I could prolly think of if I set and thought about, But that pretty much sums it up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Half awake dream

Levi,
First we need to address the experience of daydreams and why we have them. My sense is daydreams are much like dreams but not while one is in full unconscious mold. Like dreams research has shown that daydreams help us with daily mundane tasks. Research also has shown daydreams consolidates learning. Research with fMRI shows that brain areas associated with complex problem-solving become activated during daydreaming episodes*. Such experiences are equivalent to what we find in dreams. But I suspect daydreams come from the same experiences we have with dreams during non REM sleep {we dream mostly during REM sleep but also can dream during periods of non REM sleep}. Both non REM sleep and daydreams tend to focus on problem solving and creativity. Daydreams may be tapping into the unconscious world of dream but while still partiality conscious.

As for your daydream. Like dreams your movie is projecting some aspect of your life. The left is usually associated with the 'adventurous' aspects, ie Luke Skywalker, having to do with adventure {fantasies} and creativity {old Colonial pics ol Van Gogh paintings}. The civil war would represent an inner conflict. Pyramids are often symbolic of death and rebirth, this aspect touching on the deeper aspects of the psyche. Tunnels are representative of 'connecting one thing to another, such as conscious and unconscious. This part of the dream does seem to addressing 'problem solving' and conflicts associated with deeper aspects, such as creativity.

The rest of the dream pretty much seems to be a narrative of the conflict to do with the problem solving. Like dream this would be a natural therapeutic aspect, the dream/daydream addressing emotional conflicts to do with some aspect of your life. You are having to experience the different layers of this conflict. This would be an unconscious experience of learning, replacing the actual waking experiences you need to solve a problem. The conflict would be something related to your waking life that is consuming you.

Are you engaged in any type of creative experiences in your waking life? Experiences where you are trying to solve or resolve conflicts that prevent you from achievement in your life? If in fact daydreams are like non REM sleep dreams then it would be natural for them to be focusing on these 'entrepreneurial' aspects in your life. If not a creative aspect then some other entrepreneurial aspect.

Re: Half awake dream

A foot note about dreams and daydreams. I believe it important to understand the physiology and neurology, as well as other sciences {such as archaeology and of couser mythology} associations with these unconscious aspects. As Joseph Campbell stated 'the brain is an organism' just like the heart, the kidneys, etc. It has a physical purpose as well as a psychological purpose {the psychological stemming from our human condition and evolution}. Without a physical brain there would not be dreams and dreaming.

And because dreams are about the emotions, understanding the neurology is also most important {in the physiology of the brain, that space in the front reserved for dreams is the in the general space that deals with the emotions}. I have a post made a few weeks back with links to this topic. I will find it and repost it.

Another point to be made. In my studies of dream psychology, along with those other relevant science, I have yet to find any serious studies counter to Jung's philosophies of dream and the psyche. I have found political objections, and of course counter theories in parts of which are shared. You can find that merely by looking at those of us to study Jung and those who follow Freud. A big difference in approach.
