strange dream

Hello there!
Last night I had a really strange dream that kind of freaked me out. It actually seems to be the last one of a series of dreams related to a specific friend of mine, with whom I have been having some trouble for the past 2 months. But this one was really violent and vivid and I wondered if you had any suggestions as to what it could mean re the way I relate to this friend of mine, with whom I had a rather difficult discussion last night.
So, in the dream we had just finished the discussion we had last night and then my friend suddenly lied down beside me and said "and now it's time to try something else". Then he hugged me and in a very violent way (in the dream I thought he must be a total psycho!) and started doing something really strange: he started pushing my sternum (I hope I am using the right word here, I mean the bone between my breasts) with his tongue really really hard! This was so violent that I felt enormous pain. It felt like he was trying to cut my skin with his tongue and open a hole on my chest.
Do you have any suggestions as to what all this could mean?
Thank you ever so much

Re: strange dream

Kassandra,
The 'pushing your sternum with his tongue' and 'his trying to cut my skin with his tongue' probably relates to the violent expression one or both of you were engaged. Because there is a real experience of trouble with this person we can gather that the dream is in some way related to that {dreams try to help resolve emotional issues}. Plus this has been an ongoing problem, even more to believe the dream is associated to those experiences.

The trying 'something else' may be related to the more recent violent aspects of the relationship. Perhaps that has to do with harness the discussions have taken. More specifically it may be pointing to your own 'trying something else' {he representing your masculine aspects}, Did you fight fire with fire, take a hard line to his hard line approach? Not only would his words be 'cutting' but also how you reacted could also be 'something else', not something you would normally do.

Re: strange dream

Thank you so much for your reply. The truth is that we said a lot of things that hurt both of us the night I saw the dream. And I was also thinking that the tongue must have to do with words and that the sternum could be related with emotion (as it is close to the heart). But the discussion was not exactly fruitful, it didn't actually lead to any logical solution of our problems, but it somehow felt like it ended in some kind of truce between the two of us. Re the "trying something else" part, you have a point there, as I generally had a rather defensive part during most of the argument, although this is something I don't tend to do (especially when I am sure that I am on the right side). But then, maybe the fact that I behaved in this slightly different way might be the reason why things seem to be a bit better now and we didn't end up killing each other that night!
Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it!

Re: strange dream

Kassandra,
Let's examine the 'different' approach you actually took in your discussion. That is one thing that came through for me in the dream.

"So, in the dream we had just finished the discussion we had last night and then my friend suddenly lied down beside me and said "and now it's time to try something else".

I sense the friend in this part is not so much a reference to your male friend but more about your masculine aspects. In your latest response you stated you were on the defensive, something you rarely do when you believe you are in the right. The dream is addressing that difference in your approach. Then there is the 'pushing of the sternum', your heart. Does this perhaps suggest how much you feel toward this guy? The tongue could symbolize 'expression'. The hole in the heart may be the wounds you feel over the differences between the two of you.

And there is the deeper application of the 'masculine theme'. What inner conflicts could there be you possess that fit with this dream? Forget your friend all together and fix your sights on your inner being. Are there conflicts over personality traits, a different approach overall that may best suit your personality?

Re: strange dream

Hi Jerry
and thank you for your most insightful response. All the things you are mentioning may well be very true. Over the past few days I was forced to think about all those things, and actually some of them were themes that appeared in my conversation with my friend as well. I generally lack the talent of adapting easily to changes (especially sudden ones) and the whole argument with him is somehow a result of this weakness of mine. Thanks very much for pointing these out. How to deal with such fundamental problems is another story altogether though... :) It is a very painful procedure for me and I suppose the pain in the dream is pointing to this.
Thanks again, I really appreciate your help!

Re: strange dream

Kassandra,
Realizing what you have from examining this dream tells you a lot about yourself. That is a positive thing. If you don't know, or realize, you can't resolve or solve the emotional conflicts. Dreams help resolve our emotional conflicts by making us a ware of our true condition, our true feelings, our true selves.
