Thanks for your responses and from what your have written, in large makes a lot of sense.

About four years ago I was made redundant and quite fortunate that my partner's parents allowed us to move in with them to allow us to save our money to buy a property. I was also fortunate to quickly get a job. At that point, things were looking up in all aspects.

Approximately 3 years ago the marriage failed and I moved out to a flat of my own and from your interpretation need to get back (emotionally rather than physically) to where I was four years ago - which makes a lot of sense to me.

You are right, my parents, mostly my father had a "go with the flow" attitude to life.
