Dreams - What They Are and Their Function
Dreams are a succession of images, actions and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind primarily during the REM stage of sleep. Dreams are unbiased, spontaneous products of the unconscious, outside the control of conscious will. The act of dreaming is physical but the contents of dreams is psychological. They are NATURAL expressions of the dreamer's emotional/personal life illustrating experiences that possess strong emotional energies. Although there are literal applications in dreams the primarily language is symbolic, metaphorical of the dreamer's emotional energies.
  • 1. Dreams are about the emotions, emotional energies of the person who is dreaming. They offer advice and a deeper understanding of our waking life as well as the foundations for the emotional energies of the dreamer.

  • 2. The language of dreams is symbolic, but also with literal applications {literal waking experinces}. The symbolic images and actions are metaphors for the patterns or motifs for the dreamer's emotional/psychological/physical life. Every character in a dream is a different aspect of an unacknowledged aspect of the dreamer and/or a prevalent situation in the person's life involving actual persons/experiences {dreams will address both aspects}.

  • 3. The purpose and function of dreams is to guide the conscious self to achieve wholeness and offer a solution to the problems in waking life. Solutions to problems and conflicts from everyday life, as well as the deeper underlying issues, 'emotional injuries' that stem from the foundations of the dreamer {early life experiences and trama experiences in life}.
---Dreams attempt to reveal the authentic emotions and feelings that are often concealed from the conscious mind.
---Dreams compensate for conscious attitudes and personality traits that are out of balance.

  • 4. Dreams are intentional. Nature provides us with dreams to understand and help heal emotional conflicts/issues. Just as the body has the immune system to heal and protect, the psych{ology} has the dream.

  • 5. Dreams possess 'Archteypal' representations. Archetypes are universal, original patterns and images that derive from the collective unconscious and are the psychic counterpart of instinct. An archetype is an inherited tendency of the human mind to form representations of mythological motifs-representations of the symbolic images/actions without losing their basic emotional pattern. Dreams and mythology share the same archetypal images, myths as illustrations of the universal patterns and dreams as illustrations of personal patterns.

  • 6. All dreams have at least two meanings or applications. One is the symbolic representation, metaphorical of the emotional energies, and the second being a literal application where a person, place or experience is addressing a real life experience. Re: A Journey to a Better Place (Long)

After looking at your dream in-depth here is what I come away with. Exactly where and how it fits in your life you will have to determine.

Strong emotional flow related to your 'original' self {the principles you were brought up with} that was a depressing place to be in. It was a place where you were drenched in emotional conflict. Those aspects rule your unconscious life which extend to your conscious personality and motivate who you are in the present. It is not a place you wish to be and need to or/and are contemplating making changes in your life. You are having difficulties making the transition. When you do make progress the underlying unconscious energies slow you down. But not to try, leave things as they are makes it worse. You are going with the flow which sidetracks you from the needed changes.

The destination you need to get to is a place in time you either were or/and the original intent of the better life you intended. This may be addressing original intentions that have been sidetracked. You need to follow those steps where you were disciplined enough to see progress. Instead of working to make progress you are merely waiting, expecting it to automatically happen {which it won't}. You are passively looking for good luck to turn things around, expecting faith to call your number. You can visualize what a better life would be like but the unconscious emotions/motivators are too strong and you are more prone to think than do. You can do more, much more in achieving that better place in life you seek.

The reluctance/inability is partly due to the foundations in life, those early life experiences/influences that shaped your personality and psyche. The tendencies in your life is to 'go with the flow' instead of taking charge and making things happen. There is good chance one or both of your parents possessed this trait. Either way my sense is you need to get busy ad actively pursue the needed changes for a better emotional life instead of waiting for it 'just to happen'. What may make tht difficult is the personality traits from early life, those aspects being very strong to overcome.

Re: A Journey to a Better Place (Long)

    Hi Jerry,

Thanks for your responses and from what your have written, in large makes a lot of sense.

About four years ago I was made redundant and quite fortunate that my partner's parents allowed us to move in with them to allow us to save our money to buy a property. I was also fortunate to quickly get a job. At that point, things were looking up in all aspects.

Approximately 3 years ago the marriage failed and I moved out to a flat of my own and from your interpretation need to get back (emotionally rather than physically) to where I was four years ago - which makes a lot of sense to me.

You are right, my parents, mostly my father had a "go with the flow" attitude to life.

Again thanks for taking the time to interpret my dream.
